Enabling organizations to take swift climate action by setting ambitious emissions reduction targets.

About us

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. We develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest. The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Our partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

  • To mark Earth Day and this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, we’ve been reflecting on what collective action really looks like in practice. Across communities, sectors and regions, progress is being driven by people and organizations taking responsibility for change—finding solutions, working together, and accelerating the shift to a more sustainable, resilient economy. Businesses have a critical role to play in that transition. Increasingly, companies are moving beyond ambition alone—embedding climate goals into business strategy, operations and everyday decision-making. Science-based targets help turn that intent into action. They provide a clear, credible framework for companies to align with climate science, while building long-term resilience. What’s encouraging is the momentum. More companies are not just setting targets, but taking measurable steps to reduce emissions—and being more transparent about progress along the way. At a time when expectations are rising, accountability matters. Supporting companies with practical guidance and tools is key to turning ambition into real-world impact. Earth Day reminds us that lasting progress comes from the actions we take together. #EarthDay #OurPowerOurPlanet #ClimateAction #ScienceBasedTargets

  • Our recently published Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) Science-Based Target-Setting Guidance Version 1.2 strengthens clarity and consistency for companies setting FLAG science-based targets, making ambitious climate action more accessible and actionable. For companies operating in land-intensive value chains, integrating land-sector decarbonization into core business strategy is increasingly business critical. By setting FLAG science-based targets and defining appropriate decarbonization strategies, companies can help stabilize the climate, preserve the land on which their businesses depend, and capture the many benefits of target setting. Interested in learning more? Explore below the updated SBTi FLAG Guidance in Brief, which provides an introduction to the updated guidance and key steps to get started in the target-setting process. #FLAG #SBTi #ScienceBasedTargets #ForestLandandAgriculture

  • New data from our latest Trend Tracker shows that corporate climate action is becoming increasingly global in scale. What was once concentrated in a few leading markets is now expanding rapidly across regions and territories, with new centers of momentum emerging. By region:  - Asia was fastest-growing region (+53%), now expanding at a scale comparable to Europe. - Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean recorded the next highest proportional growth, increasing by 48% and 42% respectively.  - Europe continues to lead in absolute terms, accounting for the highest number of companies with targets overall, at 49%.  - Asia followed closely at 36%, and then North America at 11%. By territory:  - Japan continued to lead in the total number of companies with validated targets, with 2,091 at the end of 2025, followed by the United Kingdom (1,363). - Among territories with high penetration, China, the Netherlands, and Taiwan, Province of China, recorded the highest levels of growth. - Among territories with low penetration, Indonesia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and Mexico all achieved significant growth. Together, these trends highlight a clear shift: climate target-setting is no longer led by a handful of regions, but is becoming embedded across diverse markets worldwide.
