If your main question to a recruiter is “what’s your fee?”… you’re probably solving for the wrong thing. I get it—budgets matter. But when cost is the driver, the outcome usually follows. You don’t hire a recruiter for resumes. You hire them to actually find the right person—someone who fits, performs, and stays. What I see play out over and over: You go with the lowest fee → your inbox gets flooded → you spend weeks sorting through noise → the strong candidates disappear → now you’re starting over. Meanwhile, the role is still open and your team is feeling it. At some point it’s worth asking—what’s more expensive? The fee… or the time, lost momentum, and missed hires? Not every recruiter is the same, and they’re not all solving the same problem. If you want volume, there are plenty of options. If you want someone who actually understands the role and sends you people worth talking to, that’s a different conversation. I see this come up a lot lately, so sharing in case it helps someone recalibrate. Hiring expectations have gotten… a little disconnected from the market. I’ll get a spec that reads like: – 10+ years experience – proven leader but still very hands-on – niche technical background – strong communicator, culture add, etc. – and ideally ready to start yesterday All within a tight comp range and a quick timeline. The challenge is—those candidates exist, but they’re usually not sitting on the market waiting. And if they are, they have options. What tends to happen then: – the search drags out – solid candidates get passed over for not being “perfect” – the team carries the gap longer than expected If you’re hiring right now, a couple things that actually help: Get clear on what’s truly non-negotiable vs. nice to have Be open to candidates who can grow into part of the role Move quickly when you see alignment (good people don’t stay available long) Most of the best hires I’ve seen weren’t “perfect on paper”—they were strong where it mattered and had the upside to grow.
