About us
The San Diego Padres are a Major League Baseball club, established in 1969. The Padres compete in the National League Western Division, playing home games at Petco Park, which opened in downtown San Diego in 2004. To honor Johnny Ritchey’s legacy, the Padres Foundation launched the Johnny Ritchey Scholarship Program in 2020 to recognize local high school seniors who have overcome significant barriers. In partnership with the Masons of California Foundation and Reality Changers, $100,000 is awarded each year to ten deserving students, and tonight we celebrated this year’s recipients!

Each year, we honor the legacy of Johnny Ritchey through the Breaking Barriers Forum. The forum highlights and pays tribute to athletes and local community members who have faced and overcome adversity in their lives. This year, students from E3 High School had the opportunity to hear from Padres pitcher Mason Miller, Paralympic swimmer and Ironman athlete Rudy Garcia‑Tolson, and Paralympic track athlete Beatriz Hatz.
