Creating a more humane world and caring for more than 40,000 animals each year. #InspireCompassion
About us
San Diego Humane Society, an open-admission shelter, is creating a more humane world by inspiring compassion and advancing the welfare of animals and people. Our lifesaving safety net has helped San Diego become one of the largest cities in the U.S. to achieve zero euthanasia of healthy and treatable shelter animals. With campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, Ramona and San Diego, we provide animal services for 13 cities within San Diego County. We not only care for more than 40,000 animals in our communities each year, but also share the expertise we gain through our innovative programs with shelters across the country so they can save more lives in their communities. Although we are committed to serving as a national leader in animal welfare, our top priority is meeting the needs of our San Diego community. We provide exceptional care for all animals through world-class veterinary medicine, shelter and most of all: love. San Diego Humane Society is looking for candidates who support our mission to create a more humane world by inspiring compassion. We thrive on a Culture of Care, offering competitive pay and benefits, and our benefits are designed to help staff to lead healthy, productive and rewarding lives, both at work and at home.

We’re beyond excited to share that San Diego Humane Society has earned the 2026 Top Workplaces USA Award — an honor given to organizations that have created exceptional, people-first cultures. This is the fourth time we have received this meaningful distinction from USA Today! This achievement reflects our collective commitment to The SDHS Way — treating the animals, each other and our community with kindness, compassion and the highest standard of care. We truly couldn’t serve so many animals and people without the incredible individuals who make up the SDHS team, and it’s an honor to be recognized for the culture they create for each other and for our community. If you’d like to join our award-winning team, visit sdhumane.org/careers today!

San Diego Humane Society reposted this
Bright orange & teal floors. Palm trees. Natural light. These are probably not the first things that come to mind when picturing an animal shelter, and that's exactly what San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) set out to change. The Adoptions renovation was guided by three equally weighted priorities: the well-being of the animals, staff operational efficiency, and the visitor experience. These priorities came together in one important measurable outcome: reducing an animal’s length of stay by maximizing habitat quality and deepening the connection between animals and potential adopters. Here’s how intentional design played an important role in helping make that happen: • Sawtooth Habitat Design: Dog kennel entrances are staggered to eliminate direct sightlines between reactive animals, creating intimate niches where visitors are encouraged to pause and interact with one dog at a time, helping build an even stronger connection. • Daylighting: Floor-to-ceiling natural light floods the lobby, creating a warm, welcoming environment that reduces stress for animals, staff, and visitors alike. • Wayfinding & Technology: Touchscreen kiosks and strategically placed tablets give adopters instant access to each animal's story, photos, and details, helping them make meaningful connections before they even interact with one another. • Materials & Acoustics: Every finish was selected for acoustic performance, durability, and cleanability, ensuring each animal can show up with their true personality to visitors, free from unnecessary stress and distraction. These are just a few ways design can directly change the lives of animals and the communities that care for them.
