Part of UN Live's spotlight series on the policy brief: “Role of the Arts and Culture in Addressing the Health Impacts of Climate Change” by WHO Regional Office for Europe and the Jameel Arts & Health Lab, we are highlighting six case studies that explore how culture can shape health, climate, and policy outcomes. At UN Live, we are interested in what happens when those most affected are not just represented, but heard and able to influence the systems that shape their lives. Hawa Mein Baat, “talking in the air”, reclaims a phrase often used to dismiss. Led by Help Delhi Breathe in collaboration with women informal workers in Delhi, it centres communities living with the daily realities of air pollution: respiratory illness, lost income, and limited access to welfare. Through participatory art, these experiences move from the margins into shared space, across workshops, exhibitions, and public dialogue, reaching over 1,100 workers across 10 communities and more than 560,000 people online. Included in the policy brief for bringing the gendered health impacts of air pollution into policy view, the project highlights a persistent imbalance: those who carry the heaviest burden are often least visible in decision-making. At UN Live, we are interested in what happens when those most affected are not just represented, but heard and able to influence the systems that shape their lives. This is a great example of how culture can expand participation and shift whose voices are heard.
