I had the honor of moderating a panel at last month’s Global Pet Expo about where value is being created in pet and how founders should be thinking about capital right now. A few candid takeaways: 🦴 Treats and food innovation continue to outperform — high frequency, strong margins, and real emotional connection make them one of the most durable parts of the category. 🐾 Still, not all “innovation” is created equal. Science-backed differentiation matters more than ever; marketing alone isn’t enough. 💰 Debt vs. equity isn’t a preference it’s a use-case decision. Debt works when the outcome is more predictable (inventory, working capital, proven demand). Equity is required when the outcome is uncertain (innovation, brand building, rapid expansion). ⚖️ Where we see brands struggle most: mismatching the capital to the need...over-levering to chase growth or diluting too early to fund what should be operational. 💡 The takeaway --> capital strategy is now a core operating competency, not a back-office decision.
