Educate Every Child, Every Day

About us

Poudre School District is the 8th largest school district in Colorado including 55 schools serving ~30,000 students with 5,000 staff under one collective mission: to educate… every child, every day. We exist to support and inspire every child to think, to learn, to care, and to graduate prepared to be successful in a changing world. Our District proudly supports 1,856 square miles in northern Colorado, including Fort Collins, Laporte, Timnath, Wellington, Red Feather, Livermore, Stove Prairie, and parts of Loveland and Windsor. Nestled against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and alongside the banks of the Cache La Poudre River, Fort Collins is located 5,000 feet above sea level and has a moderate climate with an average of 300 days of sunshine and 14.5 inches of precipitation a year. Fort Collins is recognized as the #1 best place to live nation-wide (Livability) and the #1 place in Colorado to raise a family (Business Week). PSD is proud to be a top-performing district, recognized at the state and national level for student, staff and overall district excellence. Our students are selected as Boettcher, Daniels Fund, National Merit, National Hispanic, and Presidential Scholars. They are state champions in areas such as science, history, ocean and knowledge bowls, as well as in speech, debate, theatre and music. Our student athletes have become state champions in cross country, track and field, tennis, wrestling, swimming, baseball and gymnastics. Each of our schools has been recognized by the state for either student growth on standardized tests or performance and achievement.

Updates

  • PSD is outperforming the state in retaining new teachers—an issue that affects schools and communities statewide and a topic of a recent District Spotlight interview with Dr. Margarita Tovar, Colorado Department of Education’s Chief Talent Officer. In Poudre, about 83% of first-year teachers remain at their school, and roughly 51% are still there after five years, which is well above the statewide average of 33%. In a teacher’s first two years in Poudre, the educator is paired with trained mentors who provide frequent, actionable feedback with a goal of creating a safe, non-evaluative environment where teachers can reflect, improve and navigate challenges. The district also actively trains mentors to ensure consistency across schools and strengthen coaching practices. • 💙 “It feels like home.” “It feels like family.” “I feel valued.” From elementary to high school, our substitutes shared what keeps them coming back—and it all comes down to connection. For some, substitute teaching feels like coming home: returning to schools where they once learned, student taught, or taught for years, and now continuing to support students with consistency and care. Others spoke about the deep sense of family they feel—being known by name in the front office, welcomed by staff, and trusted by teachers and students alike. Across PSD, substitutes told us how much they value: ⭐Supportive, welcoming staff who make them feel like part of the community ⭐Strong relationships with students—built through patience, structure, and genuine care ⭐Schools where learning, respect, and kindness are evident at every level ⭐Coordinators, secretaries, office staff, and tech teams who go above and beyond to help them succeed Whether it’s stepping into a familiar classroom, learning alongside students, or being requested back time and time again, our substitutes make a lasting impact. They bring stability, compassion, and joy—even on the most challenging days. To all of our substitute teachers: thank you for showing up, building relationships, and supporting our schools with heart. You are seen, valued, and deeply appreciated. 🍎✨ #SubstituteAppreciationWeek #ThankYouSubstitutes
