PSD is outperforming the state in retaining new teachers—an issue that affects schools and communities statewide and a topic of a recent District Spotlight interview with Dr. Margarita Tovar, Colorado Department of Education’s Chief Talent Officer. In Poudre, about 83% of first-year teachers remain at their school, and roughly 51% are still there after five years, which is well above the statewide average of 33%. In a teacher’s first two years in Poudre, the educator is paired with trained mentors who provide frequent, actionable feedback with a goal of creating a safe, non-evaluative environment where teachers can reflect, improve and navigate challenges. The district also actively trains mentors to ensure consistency across schools and strengthen coaching practices.
