There’s something special about the places that become part of your routine. For some in Northeast Portland, Green Bridge Coffee is one of those places. This neighborhood coffee shop has become a familiar stop for many who live and work nearby. We visited Green Bridge Coffee to hear from owner Joel Stenberg about what it means to live and work in Northeast Portland, and why being near Legacy Emanuel Medical Center matters. At Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, being part of this neighborhood means caring for many of the same people who rely on places like Green Bridge every day. About us
Good health for our people, our patients, our communities and our world. Legacy Health is a local nonprofit that provides comprehensive primary, secondary and tertiary care services across the Portland and Vancouver metro area and the mid-Willamette Valley. That means helping people get healthy, and staying that way. Encouraging medical professionals to set a higher standard. Tending to the little things that help patients heal. And supporting our staff in doing whatever it takes to meet the needs of those we serve. But it's not just what we do, it's why we do it. At Legacy, our fundamental responsibility is to improve the wellness of everyone we touch, to empower people to live healthier lives, and to create a legacy that truly lives on. We strive to be a diverse, culturally competent organization. We strongly encourage individuals with diverse backgrounds and those who promote diversity and inclusion to apply. Every day, we hear from patients about their experience at Legacy Health. And more often than not, they talk about their nurse. As we celebrate National Nurses Week (May 6–12), we’re taking a moment to recognize the nurses who make a difference through their care, expertise and dedication to the communities they serve. At Legacy Health, we’re grateful for the role our nurses play, not just in clinical care, but in the trust they build and the relationships they form every day. If a nurse has made a difference in your experience, whether as a patient, colleague or partner, we invite you to share your appreciation. If someone comes to mind, you can share your message using the link: https://bit.ly/4tdfOzV

We are pleased to announce that Legacy and Regence have reached agreement on a new contract. This means all Legacy providers and facilities will remain in-network for Regence and other BlueCross BlueShield members. We recognize the stress and uncertainty many of our patients experienced during the negotiation process. We are truly thankful that we can continue to be here to serve our patients when they need us. An accident left pediatric patient Chal with burns across his torso and arms. His injuries were so severe, he told his parents he thought he wasn’t going to make it. The care team at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center assured the family that, no matter how bad things seemed, Chal would be okay. He spent two months in the pediatric intensive care unit, undergoing multiple surgeries, skin grafts and rehabilitation as he worked toward healing. This June, care for patients like Chal will continue to grow. The new Legacy Oregon Burn Center on the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center campus will open, expanding its life-saving partnership with Randall Children’s. The center will feature a new pediatric play area and a rooftop healing garden designed to support recovery and bring comfort to young patients and their families. This kind of care doesn’t happen alone. Donor support helps ensure these programs, spaces, and services are here when they’re needed most. Watch Chal’s journey and the care that made it possible.

An extraordinary local teen is using his wish to give back to the hospital that helped save his life. 🩺💙 “It was the best place to donate to, they really helped me,” said Ian. Ian’s decision to support the oncology department at Legacy Health Randall Children’s Hospital came after a challenging personal cancer journey. One his care team describes with deep admiration. “You have faced a challenge most young people don’t have to face. We have seen you do this with a quiet calm, strength, and resilience that is truly impressive,” said Dr. Kelsie Storm. “And now, you’ve made a decision that demonstrates a kind of generosity and selflessness that is rare at any age, and extraordinary at your age.” Moved by Ian’s generosity, his parents were inspired to contribute as well, with their companies stepping in to match their donations, amplifying the impact of Ian’s wish even further. ✨ “You’ve taken a gift meant just for you, and you’ve turned it into hope, comfort, and strength for other kids facing their hardest moments. Your courage and empathy are inspiring, and we’re so thankful to you,” Dr. Storm added. Ian, you inspire us all. 💙

When we talk about health, we can’t forget the role that food plays. At Legacy Health, our Food Support Program was shaped by what we heard directly from patients, including the barriers some face when trying to access traditional food resources. So we created another way. Today, we pack and distribute thousands of food bags each year, working to help remove barriers and meet a basic need that shapes overall health. Food insecurity can affect anyone, and addressing it is part of what meaningful care looks like. #Hereforgood

Gresham firefighter Spencer Tejeda spent four months in the Legacy Oregon Burn Center after suffering burns on 45% of his body while responding to a residential fire. Today, he’s back home with his wife and two boys—stronger, healing, and grateful. “The Oregon Burn Center saved my life,” Spencer shared. “Traumatic experiences, as dark as they may seem, there’s light. They hold that light and help you find yours again. Mine was pretty dim, but every single person brought me out of there.” This June, the Legacy Oregon Burn Center will continue delivering world-class care to patients like Spencer when a new, expanded burn center opens on the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center campus.
