About us
The NHM has amassed one of the world’s most extensive and valuable collections of natural and cultural history — more than 35 million objects, some as old as 4.5 billion years. Its curatorial staff not only cares for those collections, but uses them for groundbreaking scientific and historic research. The Museum also curates new, immersive exhibitions that give visitors the opportunity to explore the “big picture” of our planet — specimens and objects, the stories behind them, and the increasing interrelatedness of the natural and cultural worlds. The Natural History Family of Museums is dedicated to seeking employees who have demonstrated experience and commitment working with a diverse community.

For Earth Day, and throughout 2026, I wish you many moments of everyday awe. As Rachel Carson reflected, "Those who dwell, as scientists or laymen, among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life." Here in Los Angeles at the Natural History Museum and La Brea Tar Pits, communities gather daily in wonder, inspired by the natural world. Our staff, scientists, curators, historians, and educators witness that wonder every day in their work and understand its transformative power. Simple moments of awe and observation can open our minds to the deeper patterns of life, igniting future discoveries and responsibility for life on our planet. Why awe? Because we are all equal in awe. And, as Dacher Keltner writes, it brings us “joy, meaning, and community, along with healthier bodies and more creative minds.”

400 feet below the ocean’s surface, researchers glimpsed thousands of years into the past. An interdisciplinary group of scientists, anthropologists, students and tribal partners spent a week at sea studying ancient Indigenous landscapes buried beneath the waters around Southern California’s Channel Islands. The team included SDSU College of Sciences’ Jimmy Futty (’20, ’22), a geophysics Ph.D. student, and Jillian Maloney, associate professor of geological sciences, Amy Gusick from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, SDSU alumna Roslynn King (’22), biologists from UC San Diego, and a large group of SDSU students. The team worked around the clock to learn more about how the land evolved and how ancient people lived, all while making scientific discoveries, offering a hands-on learning opportunity for students and identifying culturally significant areas for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. La Brea #TarPits is a uniquely L.A. experience that blends science, surprise, and discovery. For nearly a century, this site in the heart of #LosAngeles, in #HancockPark, has fascinated visitors from around the world as the world’s only active Ice Age fossil sites where discoveries are still made daily. Most of these finds are cared for inside the Museum, from towering mammoths and giant ground sloths to millions of tiny microfossils. Nearly 50 years after the museum opened, we’re running out of room! Beginning July 7, the #Museum at La Brea Tar Pits will close its doors for a two-year renovation project that will increase the spaces to house its more than two million specimens. In addition to developing a more sustainable infrastructure and improving community access to these incomparable collections, the reimagined spaces will bring even greater awareness to how the Ice Age past informs how we care for our planet today.
