Updates

  • NEVHC is excited to share that one of our staff members, Christopher Gomez, was recently featured in Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County’s new quarterly newsletter, which includes highlights of staff who make LA’s community health centers exceptional! Christopher, who serves as NEVHC’s Outreach & Enrollment Manager, overseeing a team of 40 enrollers, says that he is most proud of helping people access lifesaving care. “We’ve helped people get insulin, urgent surgeries, and avoid crushing medical bills. A lot of folks don’t even know where to start to solve these challenges.” Learn more about Christopher’s role and experience at NEVHC, and how he advocates for patients: https://ow.ly/3IVE50YUL5c

  • Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) like NEVHC provide access to crucial health services for underserved communities. A significant portion of the care that FQHCs provide is made possible through Medi-Cal Prospective Payment System (PPS) reimbursements, but the California legislature has passed the elimination of the PPS rate for state-funded Medi-Cal populations, including Unsatisfactory Immigration Status (UIS) populations. In our latest blog, we explain the harmful effects this policy will have once it begins July 1st, and why the California legislature needs to either reverse this policy or at least delay implementation for one fiscal year.

  • NEVHC staff proudly advocated for community health centers at the California Primary Care Association Advocates’ 2026 Day at the Capitol. NEVHC met with representatives to share our budget and legislative priorities as a community health center and to amplify the important work that we do. One of the main issues we discussed is the importance of reversing or delaying the policy that would eliminate the PPS reimbursement for individuals with Unsatisfactory Immigration Status. Thank you very much to the offices of Senator Caroline Menjivar, Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo, and Assemblymember Celeste Rodriguez for meeting with us!

  • NEVHC's Medical Director of Pediatrics, Dr. Gina Johnson, was selected as a Community and Patient Advocate Travel Awardee, enabling her to attend the American Society of Preventive Oncology's 50th annual meeting in Denver. • NEVHC’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Christine Park, gave testimony last week to California State Assembly members during a budget subcommittee hearing. On behalf of California community health centers (CHCs), Dr. Park urged the State Legislature to reverse the elimination of Prospective Payment System (PPS) reimbursement for state-only Medi-Cal populations—or at a minimum, delay implementation for one fiscal year. Currently, Medi-Cal pays CHCs like NEVHC for services to all patients using PPS, and this supports the primary, dental and behavioral health services our patients depend on. The majority of the reimbursement CHCs receive for a Medi-Cal patient comes from PPS. However, beginning in July 2026, the California budget will eliminate PPS reimbursement for individuals with Unsatisfactory Immigration Status (UIS). Dr. Park explained how this policy will put a significant financial strain on CHCs and will threaten patient access. She urged the Legislature to protect California’s CHCs, which are the backbone of the primary care safety net. To learn more, watch Dr. Park's testimony in the video below.

  • NEVHC was honored to participate in Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County's 25th Annual Southern California Health Care Symposium last week! NEVHC Senior Program Manager Jiovanni Perez spoke on a panel titled “Bridging Coverage, Trust and Retention: Designing Sustainable Medicare Growth for Community Health Centers.” He shared NEVHC’s experience partnering with Alcar Health, an organization that provides agents who help coordinate care and provide support for patients who would benefit from Medicare services. “Our hope is that other community partners and FQHCs attending the conference can learn from our experience and consider ways to prioritize and grow their Medicare population within their own networks,” Jiovanni said about the mission of the panel.
