About us

Nashville Humane Association (NHA) is committed to finding responsible homes, controlling pet overpopulation and promoting the humane treatment of animals. Incorporated in 1946 to protect the well-being of animals in Davidson County, NHA is one of the oldest service organizations in Nashville. Our services and activities: Pet Adoptions: NHA places more than 4,000 healthy and temperamentally sound animals into loving homes each year. Animal Resource Center: NHA provides information and referrals to individuals calling with animal related questions daily. From animal care, adoption, laws pertaining to animals and more, we can assist! Humane Education: NHA personnel travel throughout Davidson County teaching the responsibilities of pet ownership and humane treatment for all animals. We also schedule group tours of our facility, educating people on NHA’s various roles in the community. Community Outreach & Spay / Neuter: Rover, our “Big Yellow Bus”, travels throughout Davidson County providing free spay and neuter for those who wish to have their pets altered, yet can’t afford it. Rover’s mission is to educate the community about proper pet care, in an effort to keep Davidson County pets healthy and decrease the number of unwanted animals. Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers play a vital role in enabling NHA to accomplish our mission. Volunteers serve in an array of roles from dog walkers to program and event assistants. Foster Care: Volunteers open their homes to foster sick and injured pets that require around-the-clock-care in a nurturing environment. Foster animals return to NHA as healthy, well-adjusted pets for placement in the adoption program.

  • Our Executive Director and her sidekick, Grizz, visited Gower Elementary for career day last week!🐾📚 Students learned about the different careers at Nashville Humane and how each role helps care for, protect, and find loving homes for the dogs and cats we serve. It also happens to be Tennessee Animal Shelter Awareness Month, and there was no better time to talk about the impact shelters make and how future generations play a big role in continuing that work. These students reminded us just how important it is to keep inspiring future animal advocates, caregivers, and problem-solvers to help save lives.❤️

  • This week alone, our Pet Food Bank helped support 55 local families and their pets.🧡 At Nashville Humane, we believe pets are family, and our Darcy Lashinsky Memorial Food Bank exists to help keep them where they belong: in loving homes. Every bag of food means one less family choosing between feeding themselves and feeding the pet they love. 🐾 Donations of unopened dog and cat food, treats, and other pet essentials help make this possible every single week. 🐾 Donations can be dropped off at our shelter (213 Oceola Ave) or shipped directly to us. 🐾 Visit https://lnkd.in/etFuXmwe to learn more about our Pet Food Bank and how you can help support this lifesaving program. Thank you for helping create a more compassionate community for pets and people alike.

  • ‼️Happening now‼️ More than 55,000 acres are burning across southeast Georgia.❤️🩹 Behind those numbers are families evacuating, communities destroyed, and shelters preparing for an influx of animals who are injured, lost, or without a place to go. As the fires continue to spread, action is already underway. Early this morning, Greater Good Charities coordinated an emergency flight to move nearly 60 shelter pets to safety from The Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia. These were not pets being separated from families, but animals who were already awaiting adoption before the fires began. This transport creates critical kennel space for animals in crisis, while allowing their team to remain focused on helping their communities through this disaster. From there, it became a team effort. Alongside Cheatham County Animal Control, Humane Society of Dickson County, and Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary, our teams welcomed roughly 50 dogs and 10 cats to Tennessee. At Nashville Humane, our priority is always the people and pets of Middle Tennessee and our state. That commitment never changes. But when disaster strikes, showing up for others is part of the work, too. So when the call came, we said yes, welcoming 10 dogs and 8 cats into our care this morning. Because in moments like this, it’s not just about one shelter. It’s about communities supporting each other, so no one has to face disaster alone. Thank you to Greater Good Charities for leading this mission, and to our community for making it possible for us to extend our impact when it matters most. Our hearts are with everyone impacted by these wildfires.❤️

  • You may not always see them, but every animal knows them.🩺 Happy World Veterinary Day to our Vet Services Team at Nashville Humane! They work tirelessly behind the scenes, providing care and medical attention to every animal that walks through our doors. From intake to adoption, they make sure each pet is healthy and ready for their next chapter. At the heart of that work are: 💚 Dr. Anderson, Chief Medical Director 💚 Dr. Lundahl, Staff Veterinarian Their leadership guides a team that performed 2,266 spay and neuter surgeries in 2025, and ensured every adoptable pet was spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. And that’s only scratching the surface! Their work happens behind the scenes, but their impact is everywhere. Join us in thanking our Vet Services Team for the lifesaving work they do 365 days a year!

The production process is expected to be completed around October 2026, and sign-ups are currently closed while the state completes this step. Already signed up? Keep an eye on your mailbox! You will receive a letter from your County Clerk once your license plate is ready to be picked up. We are so grateful to everyone who helped us cross the finish line and bring this life-saving plate to Tennessee roads! We will post updates on our social media and website as we have further information to share.❤️

  • For 80 years, volunteers have been at the heart of it all.💙 It’s National Volunteer Week, and as we celebrate our 80th birthday, we’re taking a moment to recognize the people who help make it all possible. Our volunteers are everywhere. With our animals, behind the scenes, out in the community, and often jumping in across multiple departments to help wherever they’re needed most. One day it’s walking dogs, the next it’s folding laundry, working events, or helping a shy animal come out of their shell. That kind of flexibility, compassion, and dedication is what keeps our shelter running and helps animals find their loving homes. These photos are just a glimpse into the many ways our volunteers make a difference every single day. To our volunteers: thank you for being part of this 80-year legacy. We’re so grateful for you!💙
