MultiCare is committed to cultivating, sustaining and evolving a genuine culture of belonging — an environment where all people feel safe, seen, heard, valued and welcome for who they are. In that spirit, we invited our employees to share their thoughts and experiences in honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. Here’s what they had to say.

MultiCare’s Simulation Program gives frontline team members a safe space to practice managing complex, high-stakes situations before they encounter them in care settings. Through realistic scenarios, employees — both clinical and nonclinical — build confidence, strengthen teamwork, sharpen critical thinking and prepare for moments when seamless coordination and clear communication matter most. Led by educators certified through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, the simulation team works with leaders across MultiCare to design simulations grounded in real-world challenges, such as responding to an unexpected cardiac arrest. Each scenario reflects situations our teams may face, helping them practice technical skills and decision-making under pressure. In 2025, the simulation team designed and conducted over 600 simulations for employees across our organization. Beyond developing simulations, this team of 12 has trained over 400 people across MultiCare to be simulation facilitators, enabling units to deliver basic simulations and trainings on-site. https://multica.re/4d9eFDJ

Many people feel some relief when they’re discharged from the hospital. Yet the transition from hospital to home marks the beginning of a vulnerable period. Patients may have to manage new medications and self-care routines, and they may not remember discharge instructions. Without adequate support, people can experience poor health outcomes or end up back in the hospital. The MultiCare Medical Associates population health team works with people newly discharged from the hospital to support them through this transition, with the goal of reducing hospital readmissions and emergency department visits. CenteringPregnancy is a group prenatal care model designed to combat that sense of isolation by bringing expectant parents together for community, learning and support. In 2025, MultiCare launched two CenteringPregnancy programs at MultiCare Rockwood Clinic – OB/GYN & Midwifery Center and MultiCare Capital Women’s Health, adding to an existing program at the MultiCare Family Medicine Center in Tacoma. All three programs are accredited by the Centering Healthcare Institute. “It’s really personally and professionally satisfying to provide prenatal care in this way. I really enjoy watching participants engage with each other and seeing the camaraderie that develops.” — Melissa Graham, ARNP, CNM, a board-certified nurse-midwife at MultiCare Capital Women’s Health

“I absolutely did not want to be a nurse, ever,” Angela Korver said ahead of this year’s Mother’s Day in her MultiCare Deaconess Hospital medical scrubs. She was a recent cancer survivor and a 45-year-old administrative assistant who wanted to babysit her young grandchildren. But when her daughter was failing out of a prerequisite class needed to apply for nursing school, Korver decided to join her in class. “I failed out of a semester,” said Brittany Payton, Korver’s daughter. “I was struggling to take care of my new family, and I was just going to take a break. My mom said , ‘No.’ ” The mother and daughter now work together as nurses in the Pulse Heart Institute at Deaconess. Though both have worked many places since becoming nurses in the early 2010s, they keep coming back to one another for support. Read more from The Spokesman-Review.

National Hospital Week recognizes the people whose dedication keeps our hospitals and facilities running every day. The high-quality care we provide our communities is a result of the collaborative work between many people with a wide range of roles and skills — clinical teams that provide direct patient care, support services that sustain essential operations, administrative staff who manage systems and processes to keep our organization running smoothly, and environmental services teams that make sure our facilities remain safe, clean and welcoming. To highlight the heart behind this work, we’re sharing responses from employees across our system about what called them to health care and what they love about their jobs. https://multica.re/4cDvKGT
