- Our Vision is a world without vision loss from diabetes. - Our Mission is to preserve and restore vision in people with diabetes. - Our Purpose is to ensure people with diabetes can live joyful and independent lives free from the fear and suffering of vision loss. MARY TYLER MOORE is a TV Icon and a role model who broke down barriers and opened doors for women around the world! Loved and respected, not just for her accomplishments as an award-winning actress and producer, but because Mary embodied kindness, grace, and compassion. Mary was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a young woman and suffered from diabetes-related vision loss and other complications during her life. For decades Mary played an international leading role in raising awareness of the devastating impacts of diabetes and billions of dollars to support diabetes research. Her dream was to help find a cures for diabetes and its complications, including vision loss and put an end once and for all to the suffering of millions of people around the world afflicted with this disease. In a first of its kind global collaboration, The Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative (MTM Vision) has brought together leaders and innovators from academia, pharma, bio-tech, government, and the non-profit sectors to work together to accelerate the development of new methods to preserve and restore vision for those at risk for and suffering from diabetic retinal disease (DRD). DRD is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults worldwide and sadly, new research has shown that even children with diabetes and normal routine eye exams can already have underlying abnormalities of visual function. By establishing and sharing essential scientific resources for the study of human disease, encouraging collaboration and data sharing on a dedicated platform, and supporting goal-driven, science-with-a-mission programs, MTM Vision will lead the movement to create a world without vision loss from diabetes.

This past Sunday, at LIM College's 87th Commencement, I had the honor of serving as keynote speaker and receiving a Distinguished Achievement Award and an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree. I shared a message I’ve carried with me for years: we become what we think about. It was a privilege to speak to graduates about taking risks, staying curious, and intentionally shaping the kind of person they want to become. Quinta Brunson is paying tribute to the 1970s actress who inspired her to star in her own sitcom. On Wednesday, May 6, the Abbott Elementary creator, 36, received the Mary Tyler Moore Visionary Award at Variety’s FYC TV Fest in West Hollywood, and opened up to the outlet about what it meant to see another woman accomplishing her dreams at a young age. Exciting news for the future of diabetic retinal disease research. Perfuse Therapeutics’ experimental drug PER-001 is designed to help improve blood flow and oxygen delivery in the retina — an area of the eye that can become damaged over time in people living with diabetes. When the retina does not receive healthy circulation, it can lead to blurred vision, difficulty reading or driving at night, and, in too many cases, permanent vision loss. With Bayer’s acquisition of Perfuse, this promising work now has the global support and resources it needs to continue advancing its development toward the patients who can benefit.
