Care Team Member Spotlight! Emily, Wound Ostomy Registered Nurse We recently heard from Emily, a Wound Ostomy RN who has been working at MaineHealth in this role for just over a year. “My interest in wound care developed in nursing school and has grown throughout my nursing career”, said Emily. “When the job opening was posted on the MaineHealth Careers website, I felt like it would be an excellent opportunity to use my 6 years’ experience in dermatology to pursue a specialty in nursing I have always been drawn to.” Emily added, “I very much enjoy the autonomy nurses have in this position, and the team approach this department promotes. Providers listen and value input from the nursing staff. I also enjoy the opportunity in this role to really get to know my patients. I love the willingness from everyone to help and support one another. I am grateful to be surrounded by a team with so much experience and knowledge. It's a great feeling to be in a position where you learn something new every day.” Emily – we’re so happy to hear that you’re thriving in this specialty and we’re so lucky to have you on our nursing care team here at MaineHealth! Are you a nurse who is also interested in a career in wound care? We have a full-time opening in Portland! https://lnkd.in/eNQA2UbW

We’re excited to announce that the Maine Technology Institute has awarded MaineHealth $2 million to create the state’s first Clinical Research Unit (CRU)! The CRU, a dedicated space for both early- and late-phase clinical trials, will be located inside MHMMC Biddeford. It promises Maine patients greatly expanded access to groundbreaking therapies and advanced care options close to home. We are looking forward to the possibilities the CRU will create for our patients and our team!

Congratulations to MaineHealth's Sam Woodworth on Co-Authoring this new publication!
https://lnkd.in/gnpCJZK7 Excited to share my latest publication in the Postgraduate Medical Journal with co-authors Sam Woodworth, MD and Elizabeth Lahti MD: “Imagine What We Can Do Together: Visual Art as a Catalyst for Strengthening Connections Across the Inpatient Team” Published in the Postgraduate Medical Journal by Oxford University Press, this article explores how visual art, Visual Thinking Strategies, and slow looking can strengthen collaboration, reflection, curiosity, and humanistic practice within inpatient medical teams. Drawing from narrative medicine and museum education practices and the Art Heals initiative at the UO Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, we discuss how close looking and shared interpretation of artworks can help healthcare teams: • Build observational skills • Navigate uncertainty • Foster empathy and perspective-taking • Strengthen communication and team cohesion The article centers around a facilitated discussion of Silence of the Leopards by Naeemeh Naeemaei and offers a practical model for integrating art-based reflection into medical education and inpatient care settings. I’m also reminded how meaningful professional gatherings can be. I first met Dr Sam Woodworth MaineHealth at the Society of General Internal Medicine Annual Meeting last May, and I’m grateful for the connections we made through this work and the opportunity to see those conversations evolve into collaboration and action. At a time when healthcare systems continue to grapple with burnout, disconnection, and siloed work, this publication advocates for slowing down, looking carefully, listening deeply, and creating meaning together. Grateful for the ongoing collaborations among museum educators, healthcare professionals, and interdisciplinary partners who continue to imagine new possibilities for the arts and well-being in medicine. #ArtHeals #MedicalEducation #NarrativeMedicine #MuseumEducation #VisualThinkingStrategies #ArtsInHealth #HealthcareHumanities #Wellbeing #Empathy #InterdisciplinaryLearning #UniversityOfOregon #JSMA #socialprescribing #slowlooking #museums

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month—and today, World Maternal Mental Health Day is a reminder to support moms and celebrate those who care for them! For 25 years, Dr. Leora Rabin has helped women through pregnancy and early motherhood—times that can be both joyful and really challenging. “When you treat mothers, you’re also treating children,” she says. “If we can help women feel less alone and give them support, that can be incredibly powerful.” Supporting moms today helps build healthier families for the future. Thank you, Dr. Rabin! MaineHealth Maine Medical Center

Together, we’re carrying forward a shared commitment to heart health, community, and impact. "We were honored to accept the Heart Walk Torch yesterday from Tim Gatz on behalf of MaineHealth and our Cardiovascular Service Line team. This moment represents more than a handoff; it reflects our shared commitment to advancing the mission of the American Heart Association and improving the lives of the patients and communities we serve. We are proud to carry this forward alongside our Cardiovascular Service Line team members (many pictured here) and across the entire MaineHealth system. This year, MaineHealth will participate together - whether joining us in Portland or walking with your local team and community. However you participate, we are coming together to honor and celebrate survivors of heart disease and stroke, and to continue the work that matters most. We hope you’ll join us." - Kathleen G. (VP - Cardiovascular Services) & Marco D. (VP - Chief Cardiovascular Services)

Congratulations to our students in the Tufts University School of Medicine – MaineHealth Maine Track Program on a successful Celebration in Portland today! These fourth-year medical students who have completed their classroom instruction in Boston along with community-based practice in Maine, will graduate from Tufts on May 17. As our keynote speaker, MaineHealth oncologist Dr. Jason Moran, put it, “Maine Track graduates don’t just become doctors,” Dr. Moran said. “They become part of the communities they serve. That’s rare, that’s needed, and that’s exactly what this state and country need more of right now.” We wish you the best in the next steps in your careers!

Great to see #Tennessee! Learn more about Matter of Balance: https://lnkd.in/eTN6-6P7
Thrilled to celebrate 20 newly trained A Matter of Balance Volunteer Lay Leaders representing the aging services sector across #Tennessee! Colleagues from the Tennessee Department of Health, area senior centers, UT Institute of Agriculture UT Extension, and East Tennessee Human Resource Agency completed training this week and are now equipped to deliver this evidence-based fall prevention program directly in their communities. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, and fear of falling can be just as limiting as falling itself. Programs like this—delivered by trusted community leaders—help close that gap at the local level. Proud to be part of the work happening across Tennessee to strengthen fall prevention infrastructure and help older Tennesseans live more confidently and independently. #fallprevention #healthyaging #publichealth MaineHealth
