Last week I had the honor of accepting the SOAR Award on behalf of Cherokee Classical Academy. This award recognizes a new charter school that demonstrates exceptional promise, performance, and innovation in its first five years. To be recognized in our very first year is incredibly meaningful—and honestly, humbling. As they announced the award, they highlighted what makes this community so special: strong family engagement, meaningful school traditions already taking root, consistent communication, and an academic program built thoughtfully established in our mission to provide a content-rich classical education. But the truth is, this recognition does not belong to any one person. It belongs to our teachers, who pour everything they have into their classrooms each day. It belongs to our staff, who make the impossible look seamless. It belongs to our families, whose trust, patience, and commitment have made this year such a success. Starting a school from scratch is no small thing. There have been long days, challenges, and a lot of learning along the way—but also a deep sense that we are building something truly meaningful together. I’m incredibly grateful to be part of this work and this community. And I’m even more excited about what’s ahead. Here’s to continuing to build something that lasts. As I reflect on the end of our first semester, I am grateful for this season of rest and recovery. While nothing about the semester was easy, it was deeply rewarding. Seasons of real growth are especially demanding, yet the reward is always greater than the cost. I am grateful for all that Cherokee Classical Academy has accomplished in our founding semester: 1. A strong foundation in literacy and numeracy. Initial benchmark assessments show encouraging academic growth and the establishment of a solid foundation upon which future learning will build. 2. A school culture rooted in virtue and character formation. We have implemented a schoolwide behavior system grounded in shared expectations, reinforcing both academic excellence and moral formation. 3. Meaningful faculty feedback and responsiveness. Our 90-day internal pulse survey revealed that despite the very real challenges of launching a new school, our faculty believes in the mission and direction of CCA. Action steps from this feedback have already been implemented or are actively underway. 4. The development of a collaborative leadership structure. We are in the process of appointing grade-level leads and a mentor teacher, launched peer shadowing and coaching days across grade levels, and intentionally cultivating a culture of communication, collaboration, and faculty leadership. 5. Strong community engagement and culture formation. We experienced high levels of family engagement through Leadership Coffees, Zoom calls, and major events—including over 800 attendees at our fall community event and more than 1,000 guests at our Fine Arts Night and Winter Concert. We are deeply grateful to our families for their partnership, trust, and support. 6. A moment of national recognition. Hosting the Second Lady of the United States was a profound honor—one we will forever treasure as part of CCA’s founding story. We have much to learn and many opportunities to grow. We have made mistakes, as any school does. Yet we remain steadfast in the pursuit of our mission and deeply hopeful as we look ahead to the second semester.

  • Today, we celebrate those who have acted in bravery and heroism in response to the call of liberty. Each of our schools held somber ceremonies this morning, honoring veterans in attendance and across the country. Veterans Day is an integral part of our school calendar and exemplifies the virtue and public spiritedness we teach every day.

  • If we treated education with the same precision and care as brain surgery, our world would look very different. As Leo Smith shared on The Liberty Show, every classroom moment shapes a child’s mind — just as a surgeon shapes the brain. The skill, wisdom, and attentiveness of the educator matter profoundly. At Liberty Classical Schools, we believe teaching is sacred work. It requires mastery, mentorship, and moral purpose — because we’re not just transferring knowledge; we’re forming human beings. 🎓 Hear Leo’s full perspective on how education shapes minds and societies in lasting ways. 👉 Watch the episode on The Liberty Show: https://lnkd.in/eKAD3Dwv

  • In America, we have the freedom to choose how we educate our children — and that freedom extends to teachers, too. At Liberty Classical Schools, we’re building schools where educators can truly teach what they love — history, literature, science, mathematics — not as test-driven content, but as subjects that form wisdom, confidence, and character. When teachers visit our campuses, they don’t find passive classrooms. They see 27 students leaning forward — books open, notebooks ready, engaged in real conversation. That’s not compliance. That’s formation. If you’re a teacher who believes education should prepare students not just to pass, but to live well in this world — then this is where you belong. Join us in forming the next generation of knowledgeable, virtuous citizens. #ClassicalEducation #TeacherRecruitment #SchoolLeadership #EducationReform #MissionDrivenWork #LibertyClassical
