  • Past due sales tax problems are not all the same and the difference matters a lot. If your Shopify store collected sales tax and you never remitted it, states treat that money as theirs. It was held in trust and never sent. That gets handled with urgency. If you had nexus but never turned on collection at all, you still owe the full amount plus penalties and interest going back to when the obligation started. And since you never collected it, it comes straight out of your pocket. Before you try to fix a past due sales tax situation, figure out which one you're actually dealing with. The cleanup strategy is completely different. Full breakdown in the video below.

Turning on Shopify sales tax collection before you register is not the cautious move. It's actually the wrong one. You cannot legally collect sales tax in most states without a valid permit. If you flip that switch first, you've taken money from customers under a tax you're not authorized to charge yet. And you have no account set up to send it to. Register first, then turn on collection in Shopify. That order is not optional. Full breakdown in the video below.

  • Amazon does not fully cover your sales tax. They collect and remit on marketplace transactions. That part is legit. But they don't register you in the states where your FBA inventory creates nexus. They don't file your returns. Anything you sell on Shopify or outside of Amazon? They collect nothing on those sales. Amazon sales tax compliance is a starting point, not a finish line. Know what's still on you. Full breakdown in the comments below.

LedgerGurus is a 100% remote company, which means we don't get to be in the same room very often. So when we finally got our team together at this year's Guru Summit, we made the most of it and sat down with our accountants to get their unfiltered advice for ecommerce sellers. Now we're turning it into a series. Welcome to Ask the Accountants. Episode 1: What's the biggest mistake you see sellers make? The answer is more common than you'd think. 👇 #AskTheAccountants #EcommerceAccounting #GuruSummit

  • The sellers who don't panic when Amazon shuts them down have one thing in common. Amazon isn't their only option. 61% of top-performing sellers have a wholesale piece to their business. Nearly 30% have a storefront. The revenue comes in without having to buy every customer through ads. All eggs in one basket is a fine strategy until the basket drops. Full breakdown on what the most profitable sellers actually look like is linked in the comments 👇

  • Your sales tax penalties can be cleared. Your interest cannot. These are two distinct issues, and many sellers don't realize it until it's too late. Come forward first through a voluntary disclosure agreement, and the penalties go away. But the interest runs from the original due date, no matter what. Every month you wait, part of what you owe becomes permanently unfixable. Still think it can wait? Watch the full breakdown in the comments and then decide 👇

  • Spending more on ads to grow faster? The numbers say otherwise. The most profitable growing sellers are spending 7.5% of revenue on ads. The ones burning cash trying to grow are spending 13.7%. More spending didn't buy them more results. It just bought them a better-looking loss. Before you increase your ad budget, watch the full breakdown in the comments first 👇

  • By the time you decide to deal with your sales tax, most of your options are already off the table. The sellers who get hit hardest aren't the ones who didn't know. They were the ones who knew and waited for a better moment. There's still a window. Watch the full breakdown before that window closes, link in the comments 👇

  • 44% of ecommerce sellers are growing and profitable. 15% are neither. That last group is the only one worth losing sleep over. There's usually no good business strategy behind those numbers, and nowhere easy to go from there. This detailed analysis segments companies into four quadrants based on business growth and profitability, offering insights into their financial accounting. Which quadrant is your business actually in? The full breakdown of the 2025 data is in the comments. Go find out where you land 👇
