We make a difference.

About us

KL&A Inc, Engineers and Builders is a unique firm built around the fundamental idea that structural engineers can and should return to a master builder role, taking ownership not only of design of structural systems, but also cost estimating and at-risk construction. We took the first step by building, alongside our staff of structural engineers, an in-house staff of steel detailers. Using 3D modeling software developed for steel fabricators, we found ourselves on the cutting edge of construction-grade BIM modeling before the term “BIM” existed. We have since built a company with bonding capability, and a track record of successful construction projects in which the same design engineering team carries the project through estimating, detailing, fabrication and erection of structural steel. There is no faster or more reliable process for steel construction than our integrated approach. Our philosophy of personal responsibility has generated a corporate atmosphere of problem solving that embraces scopes of work that other structural engineers might be unable to serve. At the same time, our approach to steel design and construction has informed and energized our work in many other areas, including reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, heavy timber, multi-story stick frame, and masonry design, as well as emerging materials such as rammed earth, structural insulating panels, and structural glass. High design architects have responded with enthusiasm to our creative spirit, backed by engineering fundamentals and virtual building tools, as have designers of industrial structures and all manner of building types, urban and mountain, low or high budget. Founded in 1994, KL&A is the second largest structural firm in Colorado, with four offices in Colorado and Wyoming. We have been voted one of the top structural engineering firms to work for in the U.S. since 2006.

Construction is rising at Summit House on the Auraria Campus — and Colorado’s future tallest mass timber building is beginning to take shape. The 12-story mixed-use development combines a two-story concrete podium with 10 stories of mass timber above, creating a warm, resilient, and low-carbon structure for MSU Denver’s first on-campus housing community. Once complete, Summit House will deliver more than 550 student beds alongside academic, retail, and community spaces designed to strengthen campus life in downtown Denver. KL&A is proud to serve as the structural engineer for this transformative project, helping bring innovative timber design and sustainable construction to the heart of the city. Project Team: Columbia Ventures, Metropolitan State University of Denver, SAR+ Architects, KL&A, PCL Construction, Mercer Mass Timber

Mass timber continues to shape the future of sustainable development — and we’re excited to be part of one of Denver’s most transformative projects. Denver Business Journal recently featured the Ball Arena redevelopment, highlighting KL&A’s work supporting the project team as they explore innovative mass timber solutions for two multifamily buildings planned as part of the project’s first phase. Working alongside Martin/Martin, ZGF, SAR+, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, and Generate, our team is helping advance strategies that support sustainability, accelerate construction timelines, and create exceptional spaces for future residents and visitors. As pioneers in mass timber design, we’re proud to help push new possibilities for large-scale urban development in Colorado and beyond. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gZUnk25H

Meet KL&A’s Brant Lahnert! Brant is a founding principal of KL&A with more than 40 years of experience in the field. In 1994, Brant returned to Colorado and helped establish KL&A, shaping a firm that uniquely integrates consulting engineering with at-risk steel construction. That vision has grown into the integrated mindset that continues to guide how we design, build, and collaborate today. Brant has served as engineer of record for over $1 billion in construction, including the Aspen Music Tent, the JW Marriott complex in Cherry Creek North, and the net-zero Research Support Facility at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Today, he leads KL&A’s Skunkwerx, continuing to push innovation forward after previously serving as the firm’s CFO. Outside of work, Brant spends his time with his family and on the tennis court—two things he never tires of.
