It’s amazing how many steps we include in our everyday tasks that, at the end of the day, don’t add any value to the final product. It’s only after thorough analysis of a particular process that we identify areas to “trim the fat” and become more efficient—enter the concept of process mapping. Process mapping is just that—physically writing down every single step in a process and identifying the steps that don’t add value. You’d be surprised at how many non-value-added steps could be involved in just one process. During a Kaizen event at one of our offices, we set out a goal to improve our custom filter assembly process. In doing so, we identified that it took a total of 100 actions to complete this process, 75 of which the team deemed to be non-value added. After making adjustments to the process, we cut the time to fulfill a custom filter order in half, from 40 minutes to just over 20. This translates to a significant annual labor savings, all because we took the time to improve just a single process. You don’t have to be in manufacturing to appreciate the benefits of process mapping and continuous improvement. These activities can be applied to any business anywhere.
