Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Labor issued its final rule to implement the Workforce Pell Grant program, a major step toward expanding access to high-quality, short-term workforce programs starting July 1. Workforce Pell has the potential to provide greater access to accelerated career pathways by: ✔️ Expanding federal financial aid to eligible short-term workforce programs ✔️ Removing longstanding barriers tied to traditional credit-hour requirements ✔️ Increasing access to employer-aligned training and industry-recognized credentials ✔️ Opening new pathways to quality jobs and creating greater opportunities for learners and workers from a wide range of backgrounds The release of the final rule marks an important milestone toward implementation and provides important clarity for states, institutions, and partners preparing for the launch. 🔗 Read the final rule from U.S. DOL: https://hubs.la/Q04h9dtD0 👉 Stay tuned for additional analysis and insights from JFF on what the final rule means for the field. Not all credentials are created equal—and that’s especially true for learners with the most at stake. First-gen students, working adults, underserved learners—they’re told that education is the path to opportunity. But when credentials don’t lead to good jobs or career advancement, these students pay the highest price in time, money, and trust. As Greg DeSantis says "We need to stop treating all credentials as equals. If a credential doesn't lead to better outcomes, we have to ask: why does it exist?" We need a system where credentials are transparent, trustworthy, and designed to deliver. One that’s rooted in equity, grounded in skills, and aligned with real-world outcomes.
