Earlier this month, Karla Cianci, the Preschool Site Director for the Helen Diller Family Preschool at the JCCSF, helped lead a regional summit that featured nearly 340 early childhood educators convening for a daylong retreat in Palo Alto. Titled Kehillah & Kavod, the February 13 gathering welcomed representatives from nearly a dozen Bay Area schools, including those from Sonoma, Palo Alto, Lafayette, Oakland, the East Bay and the North Bay, for a day of professional development, wellness and renewal. The attendees exchanged best practices, forged meaningful relationships and shared special sacred Jewish connections. Karla helped develop the agenda, schedule and other strategic details of the event. She partnered on the program with Mykenzie Busser, the Assistant Director of the Oshman Family JCC Leslie Family Preschool, which hosted the gathering. Cianci and Busser helped secure funding for the retreat from Early J, a philanthropic venture aimed at transforming the reach and quality of Jewish Early Childhood Education across the Bay Area and Los Angeles. We are incredibly proud of Karla for organizing this amazing retreat and for all the great work she carries out every day at the JCCSF. She is a pillar of our organization and a dedicated, compassionate champion for early childhood education. We are lucky to have her leading our young children here at the JCCSF!

When we learned late last week that SFUSD schools would be closed due to the teachers’ strike, our Family Life team stepped in with very little notice to ensure families had a welcoming, active, and supportive place to spend the day. Starting Monday, with the first day of school closures, our gym was full of energy: obstacle courses, the tumble track, springboards (with some enthusiastic flipping!), gymnastics pads, basketball, soccer, and dodgeball. When kids needed a break, small groups rotated through art activities led by our Citywide teachers. We welcomed 50 children in kindergarten through 2nd grade, and families shared how grateful they were to have a safe, joyful space during an unexpected school closure. We are deeply thankful to our Family Life team for showing up with creativity, flexibility, and care.

Miriam was in the pool at the JCCSF when she spotted a friendly face across the lane. She swam over and said, “I like your smile.” That was five years ago. Since then, Miriam and Renaldo have built a beautiful friendship - one rooted in warmth, laughter, and deep respect. Miriam is 93. She’s a Holocaust survivor who carries herself with quiet strength and remarkable grace. Renaldo is vibrant, kind, and always ready with a joke. He now picks her up three times a week. They start with breakfast, head to the Fitness Center or the pool, and enjoy lunch afterward. Their bond reminds us what the JCCSF is truly about: connection, belonging, and community across generations and backgrounds.
