Cooling tower sizing in South Florida. ASHRAE 0.4% vs 1% design wet bulb. The difference is a degree or two on paper. The consequences are not. ASHRAE publishes design wet bulb at three frequencies. 0.4%, 1%, and 2%. The number is the percentage of hours per year the value is exceeded. 0.4% means roughly 35 hours per year above design. 1% means about 88. For Miami, the 0.4% design wet bulb runs around 79 to 80°F. The 1% value sits about a degree lower. Sounds minor. It isn't. Tower selection is built on approach. Leaving water temp minus design wet bulb. Size to the 1% and the day Miami hits 0.4% conditions, the tower can't make design LWT. Condenser water gets hotter. Chiller head pressure climbs. kW per ton goes up. On the worst day of the year. When the building needs it most. In extreme cases the chiller trips on high pressure. The building can't hold setpoint. The owner calls the engineer. The cost delta to size the tower to 0.4% is small. The penalty on the chiller plant over 25 years is not. And nobody remembers the savings on the tower when the building runs hot in August.
