This week at Jack & Jill. 1. Anne Boden - founder of Starling Bank and one of the UK's most iconic founders - came by for dinner. We'd spotted her chatting to Jill. Over takeaway, she told us unbelievable stories about competing fiercely with other challenger banks, and all the sales tactics she used to get Starling off the ground... she sold ice-creams outside offices, sold Starling gloves to parents at their kids' sports games, and "did a big thing with socks" 😂 She also confessed that when she first signed up, she was so impressed by Jack & Jill that she'd considered launching a competitor. Grateful she decided against that one! (And honoured that she thinks Jack&Jill "could be huge"). ordnl.link/i4AXLG7 2. A QR-code cake arrived at our office door. This was the most delicious internship pitch we've ever received. The bar has officially been raised Lucas Crossland 🎂 3. We doubled our team size. 14 new virtual employees joined across data analytics, customer support, and marketing. The prize for most creative internship pitch goes to.... Lucas Crossland ! 🏆️ When we received a large cake yesterday, we thought it was Matthew Wilson's birthday (and he hadn't told anyone...) Instead, the QR code turned out to be a video pitch from a 16 year old founder, asking to join our team. Awesome hustle Lucas Crossland - the team loved it! PS. Nice touch using the Without Me background music - "so this looks like a job for me..."! Maybe Jill should use that for cold customer outreach 👀

The advice I'd give someone graduating today. The one question I ask in every interview: what are you looking for most in the company you join? The best candidates say the same thing... The people. I'll be honest. That wasn't my answer when I graduated. I cared about the brand name, the product, the tech stack, how fast the company was growing... I underrated people. My advice is: DON'T DO THAT. Everything else can change. Tech moves fast. The product evolves with PMF. Brands lose credibility overnight. A startup will have a lot of highs and lows. The thing that doesn't change is the people around you - at the time, and long after you've left. The lessons they share and the sponsors they become. The team we've built at Jack & Jill is what I'm most proud of: 12/16 are ex-founders and I would trust each every one to run the company. To live by the importance of relationships and the impact it has on the trajectory of your career… We're opening our office to students and new graduates that are looking for a place to co-work whilst they build a new venture.
