Great business ideas are hiding in plain sight. Inside experiences millions of people have every day that nobody has thought to make better. Ear piercing has existed forever. Millions of people do it every year. And the experience hadn't changed in decades. Mall kiosks. Tattoo shops. Doctors offices. Nobody questioned it. Louisa Schneider did. One moment at the mall with her daughter and she saw it: this is a special milestone for families being treated like a rushed transaction. So she quit her job on Wall Street, went up to her attic, and started building. No store. No funding. Just a concierge service where licensed nurses would come to your home to pierce ears. Not mall employees. Not tattoo artists. Nurses. Alongside the piercing service, Rowan sold subscription boxes of hypoallergenic earrings. Then an influencer posted about them and hundreds of orders poured in overnight. More than they could handle. So Louisa called her parents. They drove six hours and spent 48 hours in her attic packing boxes. That's what the early days look like. Today Rowan is the only ear-piercing business with its own medical board. Every single piercing performed by a licensed nurse. Over 100 locations, nearly 1,000 employees, and over one million piercings. All powered by Shopify. Look around. We were thrilled to host twenty students from The Hotchkiss School for a meet & greet with our Founder & CEO and Hotchkiss alum Louisa Schneider. The students asked thoughtful questions on everything from conducting market research ahead of a business proposal, to the importance of a consistent marketing strategy, to how to prioritize within a growing business. We left feeling inspired by their curiosity and perspective - and excited for the future of entrepreneurship.
