A 100-year storm event in the summer of 2023 destabilized a slope along a 640-foot corridor in Virginia, threatening historic homes in an established neighborhood. The existing 22-year-old drape mesh system was no longer holding. GSI evaluated several repair options and the city selected a soil nail and shotcrete solution to address global stability, eliminate failures onto private property, and minimize weathering of the existing rock cut. The solution was designed around two existing retaining walls and three city utilities, keeping the footprint as tight as possible. The scope included: 📐 499 SuperNails up to 20 feet in depth 🧱 28,424 square feet of 6-inch reinforced shotcrete 💧 Strip and horizontal drains throughout 🌊 Concrete swale at the toe for surface drainage The project was completed on time and under budget, ensuring long-term protection for the historic neighborhood. #SlopeStabilization #SoilNailing #Shotcrete #GeoStabilization #Virginia #GeotechnicalEngineering #UrbanInfrastructure

Geohazard mitigation and landslide repair for critical infrastructure across North America.
About us
GeoStabilization International is a North American leader in geohazard mitigation, built around experienced engineers and field crews who respond quickly and execute safely in challenging terrain. Founded in 2002, we deliver landslide repair, rockfall mitigation, excavation shoring, grouting and ground improvement, and GRS IBS abutment construction through a design-build model that aligns engineering decisions with buildability and long-term performance. With thousands of completed repairs and rapid mobilization capabilities, GeoStabilization International assists asset owners in reducing risk, restoring access, and maintaining the operation of critical corridors. We do this work for one reason: to protect people and the infrastructure communities rely on. Follow the page for field lessons, early warning signs, and real-world mitigation insight.

When a fill slope failed along a road inside a North Carolina state park, the repair had to meet two requirements: structural integrity and aesthetic integration with the surrounding environment. GSI provided a rapid design-build solution for the 80-foot section. The work included staged excavation, self-drilling soil nails, reinforced shotcrete facing, and a shotcrete shoulder buildout to recover up to three feet of lost road width. To meet the park's visual standards, the finished wall received a sculpted, stained shotcrete finish that blends with the natural landscape. The project was completed within weeks under full road closure. #SlopeStabilization #SoilNailing #Shotcrete #GeoStabilization #NorthCarolina #GeotechnicalEngineering #DesignBuild

A localized slope failure along a city road in Oregon was undermining the travel lane and threatening a utility pole at the north end of the site. GSI provided turnkey design-build-warranty services across the 180-foot stabilization zone: 📐 Self Drilling SuperNails up to 20 feet, anchored to a 10-foot structural shotcrete facing 💧 Flat panel drains and weep holes for hydrostatic pressure management ↔️ Lane widened to 14 feet from the centerline, recovering lost shoulder width 🚧 Full pavement rehabilitation, including milling and two lifts of asphalt concrete The utility pole at the north end required special accommodation. GSI constructed the soil nail wall around it, reinforcing it in place and avoiding any service disruption. #SlopeStabilization #SoilNailing #DesignBuild #GeoStabilization #Oregon #GeotechnicalEngineering #MunicipalInfrastructure

Six months of one-lane traffic on a coastal Oregon highway — finally over. US 101 near Neskowin reopened both lanes after two landslides in December 2025 dropped the pavement several feet and took the hillside with it. GeoStabilization International was part of the repair team, working alongside ODOT and local contractors to rebuild the slope and get the corridor back to full operation. This is what emergency response on a live coastal highway looks like. A section of US Highway 101 in Oregon experienced repeated failures, including the collapse of a 2006 gabion wall repair. Due to ongoing deep-seated instability, 550 feet of highway required a permanent solution rather than another temporary repair. GSI’s emergency design-build approach began with top-down staged excavation, removing approximately 6.5 million pounds of driving force from the active slide mass. Hollow bar soil nails, 12-foot shotcrete facings, groundwater drainage, and a permanent excavation bench were then installed to address the failure at its source. All work was completed while maintaining live traffic. When a highway section fails repeatedly, a more comprehensive and lasting solution is required. #EmergencyResponse #SlopeStabilization #SoilNailing #GeoStabilization #ODOT #Oregon #GeotechnicalEngineering #DesignBuild

An active landslide in Tennessee threatened a critical transportation corridor. GSI was brought in as the geotechnical subcontractor to design and install the tie-back anchor system for a soldier pile and lagging retaining wall, working closely with the wall contractor and engineer of record. The scope: 🔩 14,455 feet of permanent tie-back anchors 🏗️ Top-down construction sequencing from excavated benches downslope of the wall 🔧 Approximately 1,900 feet of temporary casing through backfilled sections ✅ Verification testing and grout installation throughout The project required careful access management and sequencing to keep the work on schedule and maintain coordination among multiple contractors on an active slide site. Sixteen weeks and a critical Tennessee corridor stabilized for the long term. #SlopeStabilization #LandslideRepair #TieBackAnchors #RetainingWall #GeoStabilization #TDOT #Tennessee #GeotechnicalEngineering

Highway 101 along the Oregon coast has little room for error, with steep slopes on one side and the Pacific on the other. When the southbound travel lane showed pavement distress, GSI was brought in for an emergency stabilization. The scope included: 📐 Four rows of self-drilling SuperNails to depths up to 50 feet 🧱 19-foot reinforced shotcrete slope face 🚧 Controlled density fill to recover lost shoulder width ↔️ Guardrail reset to original alignment 🚜 1,000 cubic yards of excavation in three lifts across 275 feet Two months and one of Oregon's most scenic and unforgiving coastal corridors was back in service. #EmergencyResponse #SlopeStabilization #SoilNailing #Shotcrete #GeoStabilization #ODOT #Oregon #GeotechnicalEngineering #Highway101
