I've heard TA leaders say a number of things when you ask what they're looking for in a new hire right now. But a common one is critical thinking and problem solving ability. Ask a CEO and they're more likely to say it's AI skills. Those two groups work in the same buildings. They're trying to fill the same roles. And they are, functionally, describing different things. That's one contradiction. There are many more haunting your recruiter friends these days. One I find interesting is how recruiters are being told they're strategic talent advisors now. But too often, their performance reviews still measure things like time-to-fill. All the while they're on the front lines of one of the weirdest situations around AI and work. The job marketplace. Candidates using AI to apply for jobs while the other side uses AI to screen them. The humans on both sides have become observers in a process that was supposedly built to connect them. This is what a function looks like when the ground shifts under it faster than the systems built on top of it can adapt. I dug into some of the contradictions causing what feels like a recruiter identity crisis.
