About us

Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is Michigan’s largest public education system. It is governed by a locally-elected, seven-member board with Dr. Nikolai Vitti serving as superintendent. The District’s mission is to provide every student with a beneficial and rightful educational experience, preparing students to be career and college ready, and qualified to compete in the global market. We champion a whole child approach that combines superior academics with socio-emotional, extracurricular, and health services tailored to each individual student's needs. The District has 106 schools and educates 50,000 children.

  • In April, 20 outstanding students and their families from Cass Technical High School and Renaissance High School welcomed 40 visiting students from Yamate Gakuin High School in Yokohama, Japan, into their homes and communities. Over the course of the exchange, our students and families shared language, culture, traditions, and meaningful experiences that strengthened our global connections and deepened cross‑cultural understanding. On Friday, April 24, we bid farewell to our Japanese guests as they returned home; however, this exchange marks the beginning of an ongoing partnership. This July, our Detroit students will travel to Yokohama to continue this life‑changing experience with their host families, further solidifying these relationships and broadening our students’ global perspectives. A sincere thank you to our students, families, staff, and school communities who made this experience possible. Your commitment, hospitality, and collaboration are shaping the next generation of global‑‑minded leaders and reinforcing Detroit Public Schools’ role in international education.

  • Today on Live in the D, we spotlighted the amazing news happening across the District— from the School of Marygrove Robotics Club making history, to our high school redesign creating new pathways for students to earn college credits, an associate degree, and skill training and our newly launched DPSCD Influencers. We were also joined by two of our amazing influencers, DaVon from Denby High School and Janiah from Cass Tech, who shared their experience as DPSCD Influencers. Our Chief Engagement Officer, Sharlonda Buckman, also shared exciting updates about the district’s great news and the many ways our students are shining. It was a fun day on set with Live in the D — and there’s so much more ahead. #DPSCD #WeWillBecauseWeCan https://lnkd.in/gqY9_hHr

  • At Detroit Public Schools Community District, a $700M investment is transforming schools across the city bringing modern classrooms, upgraded facilities, and hands on career training directly to students. At Southeastern High School, students like Michael Momphery are already benefiting from a brand-new welding and manufacturing annex equipping them with real world skills before they even graduate. From improved air conditioning and safer buildings to new schools like Paul Robeson Malcolm X Academy, these upgrades are about more than infrastructure they are about rebuilding trust, creating opportunity, and strengthening Detroit communities. This is what investing in students looks like. This is what keeping promises looks like. Learn more - https://lnkd.in/gnvPFahy... #DPSCD #DetroitSchools #StudentSucce

  • We’re excited to launch our new campaign slogan: “We Will Because We Can.” More than a message, it’s an affirmation of who our students are and what they’re capable of. It speaks to their confidence, their drive, and their belief that they can succeed in school, in life, and in every opportunity ahead of them. At DPSCD, we know that real change happens when we move together. Our students, families, educators, staff, alumni and community all play a role in building momentum and pushing our district forward. This campaign is a celebration of that energy, that unity, and that shared purpose. It honors how far we’ve come, the strength of our community, and the bright future we’re building every day. Our students are at the center, and their voices, dreams, and potential lead the way. We are Detroit Public Schools, A Community District! We Will Because We Can. And together, we’re showing exactly what’s possible. #WeWillBecauseWeCan https://lnkd.in/diEVxKpR

  • We couldn’t agree more!! Congratulations Ms. Janine Scott!!

In celebration of 70 years of U-M IOE, we’re sharing the story of an outstanding alum every month. Today, we’re featuring alumna Janine Scott, an award-winning lead math teacher at Detroit Public Schools. After working in systems engineering and IT sales, a health scare redirected Scott to her initial passion: teaching. Now, she works to improve education systems, student learning and fellow educators. "My industry experience helps me as a math teacher because students often ask when they’ll use math in real life. I explain that while they may not write equations outside of college math, they’ll use the thinking skills and step-by-step problem-solving processes in everything." Read more about Janine's career pivot, the power of adaptability and how she continues to make things better everywhere she goes ➡️ https://bit.ly/3M7UZqi

  • It may have been chilly outside, but inside the room? Pure excellence. Today’s Detroit Public Schools Community District Spelling Bee was a powerful reminder of what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Our students showed focus, confidence, and vocabulary mastery under pressure — and they delivered. Huge appreciation to Ms. Leenet, Ms. Cassie, Ms. Emily, our Literacy Team, volunteers, parents, and school leaders who made the day seamless and student-centered. These moments don’t happen by accident. They happen because committed adults build the platform for students to shine. In a time when the national conversation questions literacy, our scholars took the stage and answered with discipline, courage, and excellence. Proud of our team. Proud of our students. Proud to showcase literacy excellence in Detroit. #DPSCDProud #LiteracyMatters #StudentAchievement #DetroitExcellence
