As our team closes out construction on a project on the Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’ve been reflecting on what made this project a success: a shared commitment to unconventional architecture. Our design intent was minimal and clean—which, as many in the industry know, is often the hardest to execute. With no "standard" details to fall back on, every inch of this home required high-level documentation from our side and flawless execution from the team at Design Line Construction. This was the first custom home I’ve seen through from start to finish, and my biggest takeaway wasn't about the drawings; it was about effective partnership. When the architect and contractor operate in a deeply aligned and collaborative manner toward a quality and beautiful home, the results speak for themselves. I walked away with many lessons, but the most important is this: Find a contractor who cares as much about the design intent as you do. The team at Design Line didn't just execute our drawings; they collaborated on the vision. When the focus shifts from "this isn't possible" to "how do we make this work," you end up with something truly special.
