Great conversations this week at the Ascentis Facilities & Campus Energy Summit in Washington, DC. It was valuable to connect with leaders across higher education and healthcare who are navigating many of the same challenges as they work to modernize campuses, reduce emissions, improve resiliency, and manage aging infrastructure. A few themes came through loud and clear: ➡️ AI is no longer optional. From operational efficiency and predictive maintenance to energy management and capital planning, institutions are looking for ways to leverage AI across their organizations to do more with fewer resources. ➡️ Workforce development continues to be a major challenge. Many campuses are facing the reality of retiring expertise, limited staffing, and the need to attract and train the next generation of facility and energy professionals. ➡️ Data is critical for telling the story. Whether discussing deferred maintenance, decarbonization goals, resiliency planning, or operational savings, institutions are relying more heavily on data-driven insights to build alignment and support smarter decision-making. ➡️ Risk quantification matters more than ever. When discussing project impacts with CFOs and leadership teams, the conversation increasingly comes down to one thing: risk. Risk of deferred maintenance. Risk of utility volatility. Risk of compliance penalties. Risk of system failure. Risk of inaction. The ability to clearly quantify and communicate those risks — alongside the value of resiliency, efficiency, and decarbonization investments — is becoming essential for moving projects forward.
