Meet Your Home Guard U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Scott Oakes serves a dual role within the Colorado Army National Guard. Daily, Oakes is the noncommissioned officer in charge of force protection and security at the Colorado Department of Military and Veteran Affairs facility, also known as Joint Forces Headquarters-Colorado, in Centennial. His team of Soldiers and Airmen provide security to the DMVAs full-time staff as well as build relationships with the local first responders, civilians and partner agencies that utilize the facility and the resources its staff provides. For his National Guard duty, Oakes is a platoon sergeant for Battery B, 3rd Battalion, 157th Field Artillery in Aurora, Colorado where he is responsible for four HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems) teams. Prior to the military Oakes was a master plumber. He says he joined for patriotism. “Ever since I was little I wanted to be a Soldier,” Oakes said. “Then, when 9/11 happened I joined up. I wanted to go fight the fight.” Oakes is a Colorado native, born in Cortez and currently living in Berthod. In his free time, he like to go hunting and fishing and said he is an avid Elk bow hunter.
