🚨 New Invited Editorial in NEJM Group AI! 🚨 Can generative AI help prepare medical students for OSCEs? In our latest editorial, Arya Rao and I examine the promise and the pitfalls of AI-driven clinical simulations. Building on a randomized trial by Lavigne et al., we explore how AI-simulated patient encounters can improve emotional readiness, reduce absenteeism, and enhance performance. But we also ask: What might be lost when AI makes learning easy? If AI reduces the cognitive effort required to engage in clinical reasoning, do students risk missing the very struggle that leads to expertise? We argue that AI must be used not to replace but to scaffold the process of becoming a clinician: supporting deliberate practice and feedback-rich learning. It’s not a question of whether AI will shape clinical education, because it most certainly will. The question is how we’ll shape its integration to uphold the values of the profession.
