Mental Health Awareness Month draws attention to the psychological dimensions of physical health conditions, including hearing loss. Research consistently documents the mental health consequences of untreated hearing loss: higher rates of depression, increased social withdrawal, greater anxiety, and accelerated cognitive decline. For older adults, phone-based communication represents a key point of vulnerability. When calls become difficult to follow, avoidance behaviors develop and social isolation deepens. Caregivers are often the first to notice these changes but may not connect the behavioral shifts to a communication barrier.
