Cambridge - Combining Curiosity, History, and Discovery

About us

Cambridge is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States, in the Greater Boston area. It was named in honor of the University of Cambridge in England, a nexus of the Puritan theology embraced by the town's founders. Notably, Cambridge is home to two internationally prominent universities, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. According to a 2008 census estimate the city population was 105,594. It is the fourth most populous city in the state, behind Boston, Worcester, and Springfield. Cambridge is one of the two county seats of Middlesex County (Lowell is the other). The site for what would become Cambridge was chosen in December 1630, because it was located safely up river from Boston Harbor, which made it easily defensible from attacks by enemy ships. The first houses were built in the spring of 1631. The settlement was initially referred to as "the newe towne". Official Massachusetts records show the name capitalized as Newe Towne by 1632. Located at the first convenient Charles River crossing west of Boston, Newe Towne was one of a number of towns (including Boston, Dorchester, Watertown, and Weymouth) founded by the 700 original Puritan colonists of the Massachusetts Bay Colony under governor John Winthrop. The original village site is in the heart of today's Harvard Square. The marketplace where farmers brought in crops from surrounding towns to sell survives today as the small park at the corner of John F. Kennedy (J.F.K.) and Winthrop Streets, then at the edge of a salt marsh, since filled.

  • 🔊 🙌 City Staff Spotlight: Get to know Phoebe West, Project Coordinator at the Housing Liaison Office! Phoebe's work centers around projects, programs, and policy relating to housing and homelessness in Cambridge. In this role, she strives to bring systemic change to dismantle existing barriers to housing that impact Cambridge residents. “My role is really thinking about, ‘How do we make housing services in Cambridge, specifically, better?’” she said. “And, ‘How do I support the work in structural, systems-wise [ways], to make it easier for case managers to do their direct service work?’” Supporting community members with housing underscores what Phoebe believes is most important about local government—that it serves the people.  “I profoundly believe that housing is a human right, and I profoundly believe that your government should be working for you, and people should get services, and that, if we as a universe have money, we should be giving it to the people who need it most,” she said. Phoebe, who graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and then Harvard College, has lived and worked in Cambridge for almost her entire life. To Phoebe, her work is a valuable way to give back to the city where she grew up. “I so appreciate the mixture of people and the investment in that. I really appreciate that we’re willing to think outside the box and that the City is willing to stick its neck out for others,” she said. “Not everybody is fortunate enough to still believe the city they grew up in is still exciting and cool and awesome, and they want to continue to be there, so I think that’s a testament to the Cambridge vibe.”  Learn more about Phoebe, what she does, and why she loves working at the City of Cambridge in this article: https://lnkd.in/eTET-J4Y

  • ✨ City Staff Spotlight: Get to know Serena Franks, Assistant Director of Operations at the Emergency Communications Department! 🙌 ✨ In her role, Serena takes the lead on a number of operational issues, including managing employees, assisting with hiring and training, coordinating with vendors and outside agencies, and various other aspects of the day-to-day operations of a department that runs 24/7. The opportunity to serve members of the community in need is why she loves her job. “At the end of the day, I don’t think that there’s another job like this,” she said. “There’s no job where I feel like you’re helping people in the way that we’re helping them, in so many different ways. I’ve always really liked this type of work.” Serena said that other members of the department were incredibly welcoming when she moved to Cambridge, and she explained that in her role, she strives to help all members of the staff feel supported in their well-being. While she did not necessarily know she would end up in the field of emergency communications, she cannot think of a more enjoyable and meaningful way she could serve the public.   “I love to be able to support the staff and support the citizens in a way that is really impactful. It’s not just coming to work everyday and doing some policies and going home ... what we do impacts the community in a big way, even though we’re like the silent partner sometimes,” she said.   Learn more about Serena, what she does, and why she loves working at the City of Cambridge in this article: https://lnkd.in/eauNZAhs

  • Cambridge is joining a growing global network of cities advancing sustainable, plant-based food systems to address climate change and support public health 🌱🌍 With unanimous City Council support, the City has endorsed the Plant Based Treaty—committing to expand plant-based options across municipal programs, events, and public education. This builds on ongoing work across departments to make healthy, sustainable food more accessible, affordable, and culturally relevant. From nutrition programming to community partnerships, Cambridge is continuing to integrate food systems into its broader climate and health strategies. #ClimateAction #PublicHealth #Sustainability #LocalGovernment #CambridgeMA

Celebrating an Exciting Milestone! 🔊 🙌 🤝 🎉🏆 The City of Cambridge is thrilled to share that we have earned @BloombergDotOrg @WhatWorksCities Platinum Certification for the first time! This prestigious honor reflects our dedication to using data to improve city services and resources, evaluate local programs, and engage our residents.     📊 By earning Platinum Certification, Cambridge joins only four other cities in North, Central and South America (!!) to represent the highest international standard of data excellence in city governance.    📌 Data isn’t a one-time project in Cambridge; it’s a long-term investment driving our future. For example, by using data-driven evidence, Cambridge can provide free preschool to every 4-year-old and some 3-year-olds in the city through the Cambridge Preschool Program. Since the launch of the program in 2024, more than 1,450 children have been enrolled in preschools through the program.     This is a milestone in our data journey that signifies that we continue to strengthen how we use data to improve the services and programs that residents count on. We’re proud to continue building a smarter, more responsive and more accountable city.    🔗 Learn more about our What Works Certification: Results for America Awards Cambridge With Bloomberg Philanthropies What Works Cities Highest Level Certification for Exceptional Use of Data https://lnkd.in/e4-7Mtq4 #CambridgeMA #WhatWorksCities #DataDrivenGovernance
