Making innovative pediatric research possible since 1942.
About us
At the Charles H. Hood Foundation, we are committed to transforming the lives of children by funding pioneering research and accelerating innovations in pediatric healthcare. Founded in 1942, our legacy began in New England—but our impact is global. We fund early-stage investigators and breakthrough solutions that improve child health and well-being around the world. By focusing on the critical early phases of research and development, we serve as a catalyst for discovery—springboarding the next generation of pediatric thought leaders, technologies, and treatments. We support high-risk, high-reward work that might otherwise go unfunded—helping bridge the gap between bold ideas and real-world impact. Each of our programs is designed to propel scientific progress, foster collaboration, and bring life-changing innovations to children and families faster. Our three core initiatives include: Child Health Research Grants – Supporting early-career investigators with promising, hypothesis-driven pediatric research in basic, clinical, and public health disciplines. CH Innovations (Program-Related Investments) – Investing seed-stage capital in for-profit startups developing pediatric diagnostics, devices, therapeutics, and health technologies. Hood Pediatric Innovation Hub at MIT – A new collaboration with MIT HEALS, advancing interdisciplinary solutions to the most pressing unmet needs in pediatric medicine. Together, we are building a pipeline of discovery—investing in people, ideas, and innovation that will shape the future of pediatric health. Learn more at charleshoodfoundation.org

We’re proud to be part of this important initiative. Through the Hood Pediatric Acceleration Award, we’re excited to support early-stage companies working to bridge the gap between promising innovation and real-world impact in pediatric health. Looking forward to engaging with this year’s applicants and finalists. #HoodFoundation #ChildrensHealth #PediatricInnovation
A little over ONE week left to apply! The #CIF #CatalyticInnovationPrize in Children’s Health has gained a powerful new partner: the Charles Hood Foundation. This year, alongside CIF’s $100,000 equity investment prize, the Hood Foundation is joining with the new Hood Pediatric Acceleration Award — adding a SECOND $100,000 investment opportunity for an early-stage startup advancing children’s health. That means $200,000 in potential funding, but it also means something bigger: more momentum for pediatric innovation, broader visibility for the companies selected, and a stronger network around founders building bold solutions for children and families. We’re proud to welcome the Charles Hood Foundation as a partner in this year’s prize and excited to expand the support behind the innovators moving children’s health forward. Awardee Spotlight: Dr. Jin Zhang Assistant Professor, UMass Chan Medical School Diet-driven Tongue Epithelium Reprogramming and Taste Desensitization Why do children continue to crave sweets—even on diet beverages? Dr. Zhang is investigating how sugar and artificial sweeteners reshape taste buds and dull sweet perception. Her findings could help curb overeating and offer new interventions for childhood obesity. By understanding how taste rewires with diet, we can build smarter strategies for healthier futures. Awardee Spotlight: Dr. Chantal Vogels Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Yale School of Public Health Uncovering the Potential for Dengue Virus Escape from Vaccine-Induced Immunity As dengue vaccines roll out globally, Dr. Vogels is focused on a crucial question: Can the virus evolve to escape the vaccine-induced immune response? Her lab is mapping all potential virus variants and testing how they interact with human antibodies to predict and prevent vaccine escape. Her work will guide safer vaccine strategies to protect children in dengue-endemic areas.
