Building useful software inside an EMR has historically required either being the vendor or routing around the vendor through narrow APIs. That's the constraint Canvas was designed to remove. Andrew Duane walks us through the Canvas Companion, our new mobile experience for providers. The news isn't really the mobile app. It's what the mobile app reveals about how the whole platform works. The Companion is a thin three-tier shell, with almost no features baked in. Every actual surface inside it (task dashboards, messaging, patient visualizations, ambient scribe documentation) is a plugin built with the Canvas SDK. It's the same SDK we ship to customers, with the same capabilities. Nothing more, nothing less. Plugins are not on top of Canvas. Plugins ARE Canvas. Every healthcare organization building custom applications on a legacy EMR hits the same wall. Their workflow needs persistent state the EMR’s data model has no place for. So they bolt on an external database, and a sync layer, and their own auth. Suddenly half the roadmap goes to infrastructure plumbing instead of product, and patient data ends up in two systems that never quite agree. Plugin developers can now define and store their own data models directly inside the Canvas runtime. No external database. No parallel infrastructure. 📊 CustomModels: structured, typed tables with ForeignKey and ManyToManyField relationships. Best for schemas you want to query, filter, and aggregate. 🗂️ AttributeHubs: schemaless key-value and document storage. Best for sync cursors, configuration, and variable-structure data. Both run within plugin namespaces, with isolation by default and explicit sharing across plugins when needed. Custom Data joins SimpleAPI and Custom UX as the three building blocks for full healthcare applications running inside Canvas.
