If advertising had a Super Bowl, it would be what we call “The Final Pitch.” And that raises a question, would any championship team ever walk into the biggest game of the year without knowing who they were up against? Of course not. When you think about it, it’s almost comical. They study film. Analyze strengths and weaknesses. Build game plans designed to exploit every weakness to gain any advantage. They know all their plays and their players. The best and the worst. They study their strategies. Who will play and who will not. And most importantly, how they play. That’s what competition is about, doing what ever it takes to win. So tell me, why do agencies walk into pitches every day, and have since well, maybe forever, without knowing who they’re competing against? It’s become the norm and everyone seems to accept it. Why though? Why is this ok? I guess I’m tiring of the “level playing field” excuse. “If we answer that question for you, we’d have to share that information with every agency.” Ah ok, but why? If another agency is smart enough to ask the right questions, they’ve earned the answer. If they don’t ask, they shouldn’t get it. That’s not unfair. That’s called gaining an advantage. It’s what you do if you want to win. Curious to what others think about this. Oh yeah, go team.
