Space Enterprise at Berkeley was thrilled to have recently hosted Boom Supersonic and CEO Blake Scholl at UC Berkeley! We were excited to showcase SEB’s operational facilities at the Richmond Field Station, where Blake and his colleagues got hands-on with our propulsion, avionics, and composite systems and learned more about our technical operations. We followed it up with an on-campus, joint SEB x Boom Supersonic networking event, bringing together nearly 100 students and industry professionals! Boom shared thoughtful insights into the future of supersonic aerospace, sparking engaging discussion throughout the evening. Our attendees got a chance to connect directly with the Boom team and continue the conversation after the talk! We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to host such an inspiring team and look forward to building a lasting relationship with Boom to create more opportunities like this for our community!

Last week in Washington DC, our team presented to the National Aeronautic Association as a finalist for the 2025 Robert J. Collier Trophy — the most prestigious award in American aerospace, awarded annually since 1911. We were nominated for XB-1, the first independently developed supersonic jet to fly, and the first American civil supersonic aircraft to take to the skies, ever. I had the privilege of presenting alongside our founder Blake Scholl and test pilot Tristan Brandenburg — representing the scores of people who made that program real. We didn't take home the Collier this year. My sincere congratulations to Firefly Aerospace on the well-deserved recognition for achieving the first commercial, autonomous lunar landing. It is humbling to lose out only to a team that landed on the moon! The NAA committee's feedback given to us pointed toward programs with more demonstrated operational use — which, honestly, is exactly where we're headed. XB-1 was never the destination. It was proof that a small, focused team could design, build, and fly a supersonic aircraft from scratch. The destination is Overture, and the return of supersonic passenger flight unlocking a dramatically more accessible planet. Being a Collier finalist puts XB-1 in rare company, and I'm proud of every person who contributed to that program. Now back to work.
