Many thanks to Olivia Walton for her work to change the maternal care landscape in Arkansas. The doula program within our Ignite Professional Studies is also working to graduate students who will make an immediate impact on the health of expectant moms by ensuring women receive the support they need while pregnant and in the weeks after giving birth. #whereexcellencelives
This week I visited Ignite Professional Studies' new doula training program in Bentonville Schools — and met several young women who are going to help lead Arkansas out of its maternal health crisis. I found a room full of high school juniors and seniors who can speak confidently about labor & delivery and the role of advocacy in maternal care. After this program, many told us they want to devote their careers specifically to women's and maternal health. One young woman even told me, "doulas are putting the heart back in healthcare.” For those who don’t already know, a doula is a trained, non-medical support person who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to a mother before, during, and after childbirth. Research repeatedly shows just how effective doulas can be in improving safe births, especially bringing down c-section rates and reducing labor time. Doulas are particularly helpful in improving outcomes in rural settings, where there are often few other options and they can help get mothers to more advanced care when its needed. Ignite’s doula program is exactly the kind of career entry point we need to build the maternal health workforce America is missing. And it's only possible because being a doula is now viable vocation— thanks to Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signing the Healthy Moms Healthy Babies Act and making doula services reimbursable by Medicaid. That policy change turns a passion into a paycheck. I’m grateful to Pearl Mcelfish at UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Nicolle Fletcher from Ujima Maternity Network, Wendy Broughton at Ignite, and Cara Osborne from Heartland Forward's Maternal and Child Health Center for Policy & Practice — whose partnership and vision all made this program possible. And, to the amazing leaders at Ignite who have created one of the most promising career development programs anywhere in the country.

Bentonville Schools, Alice L. Walton Foundation and Heartland Whole Health Institute announced plans today to partner on an expansion of our Ignite Professional Studies program on the future Bentonville Health Care Campus. Discussions are underway for the Foundation to provide a space to expand Ignite’s health science, technology, global business and engineering programs. In addition, we are in discussions with the Alice L. Walton Foundation to expand the program to include more students from neighboring districts, including Decatur, Fayetteville, Gentry, Gravette, Pea Ridge, Rogers, Siloam Springs and Springdale Public Schools. Expanding these programs will allow our students to gain real, relevant knowledge through industry mentors and partners. #whereexcellencelives

Out Ignite Professional Studies students are receiving national attention for their use of AI to problem solve here at home. #whereexcellencelives
This district isn't treating AI literacy as a separate class. Instead, they're integrating it into all 10 of their high school career pathways.
