I usually keep my Friday posts light and focused on tech trivia. This week is different. Last night, I had the honor of delivering remarks on behalf of the Groveland Select Board at our local American Legion Post 248 ceremony. It put things in perspective on how I wanted to close out the work week. We all look forward to this weekend. It's the official kickoff to summer, a chance to fire up the grill, unplug from the tech alerts, and spend uninterrupted time with family. We've earned the break. But as you slide into the long weekend, take a moment to remember the actual reason for the day. In my town of Groveland, Massachusetts, our Civil War monument stands just a short distance from the town square. Dedicated in 1866, just one year after that devastating conflict ended, it remains one of the oldest memorials in the Commonwealth. Our ancestors didn't wait for a national holiday to be established. They didn't wait for time to blur the edges of their grief. They felt the immediate, local weight of loss. They knew the names of the men from our community who went to war and never came home. The men and women we honor this weekend were not abstract historical figures. They were once children playing in our neighborhood parks, neighbors passed at the local post office, and citizens who believed that freedom, democracy, and one another's safety were worth everything. Enjoy the grills. Enjoy the family. Enjoy the weather. But as we step away from the keyboard, don't look past the monuments. Remember the ones who paid the tab for the freedom we are enjoying this weekend. Have a safe, restful, and meaningful weekend. • A rising vulnerability count doesn’t always mean security is getting worse. Sometimes it means you’re finally measuring the environment honestly. One of the reasons testing cadence drops is that teams worry about what the numbers will look like to leadership, especially if the first few tests surface a lot. The real win isn’t “a small number.” The win is a process that can consistently find, prioritize, fix, and retest. If you want executive buy-in for better testing, don’t lead with findings volume. Lead with outcomes: what got fixed, what got validated, and what risk you reduced. Read More: https://hubs.li/Q047VPg_0 #securitymetrics #governance #riskreduction #cybersecurity

  • Secure access isn’t a tool. It’s an operating model. If your strategy is built on point solutions, you’re likely missing the bigger picture. Modern environments demand continuous validation, not one-time controls. It’s time to rethink how access is managed across users, devices, and applications. 👉 Read now to learn more: https://hubs.ly/Q04d30Q90 #ZeroTrust #Cybersecurity #SecurityArchitecture #IdentityManagement

We have spent years locking down human identities. MFA. SSO. PAM. Zero Trust. Meanwhile, the back door is wide open. ManageEngine's 2026 Identity Security Outlook puts machine-to-human identity ratios at 100 to 1 in the average enterprise. Some environments hit 500 to 1. Gartner called non-human identity management one of its Top 6 Cybersecurity Trends for 2026. SpyCloud's 2026 Identity Exposure Report found a sharp rise in exposed API keys, session tokens, and machine credentials circulating in criminal underground data. 97% of those identities carry excessive privileges. 71% are never rotated. And only 15% of organizations feel confident they can prevent an NHI-based attack. Service accounts don't get MFA. They don't get offboarded. They just sit there with whatever access someone gave them the day they were created. The question for your team this week: Do you have a live, current inventory of every non-human identity in your environment? Not a spreadsheet from last year. A live inventory. If it takes more than a few minutes to answer that, you have your answer. Atlantic Data Security, LLC #CyberSecurity #IdentitySecurity #ZeroTrust #SecOps

The average enterprise runs 45 security tools (Gartner, 2024). This week alone, we watched a Certificate Authority (DigiCert) get breached, an EDR (Microsoft Defender) quarantine its own foundational infrastructure, and an XDR vendor (Trellix) lose source code. Three different tools. Three different failure modes. All in the same week. At what point does more coverage create more risk? Every tool in your stack is a vendor relationship, a potential vulnerability, an integration dependency, and a source of alerts your team has to triage. The more tools you add, the more surface area you create. You are trusting more vendors to get it right at a time when the Watchers themselves are the primary targets. This week proved they don't always. Is your security stack built around genuine defense in depth or has it become a collection of tools that made sense at the time and never got rationalized?
