𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗜𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗡𝗬𝗖’𝘀 𝗘𝗹𝗺 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 For decades, the majestic American Elm was one of New York City’s signature trees — until Dutch Elm Disease (DED) devastated the population in the late 20th century. Today, through ongoing monitoring, advanced treatment methods, and the dedication of arborists and park officials, these iconic trees are making a remarkable comeback. Almstead is proud to be part of that effort by inoculating American Elm trees throughout New York City against Dutch Elm Disease using DutchTrig®, an organic and biological control treatment. This innovative vaccine contains spores of a specific strain of Verticillium fungus that stimulates the elm’s natural defense system, helping the tree resist infection from the DED fungus. The treatment is administered through a handheld microinjection system designed to deliver the vaccine directly into the tree with minimal impact to the surrounding tissue. When combined with regular monitoring and proactive care, this approach can play an important role in preserving valuable elm trees for future generations. If you have elm trees on your property, contact your Almstead arborist to schedule an inspection and discuss whether preventive Dutch Elm Disease treatment is recommended. #DutchElmDisease #AmericanElm #TreeCare #Arboriculture #NYCTrees #dutchtrig

Almstead’s 𝗥𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝘂𝗳𝗳 (New Jersey Branch Manager), 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗮 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗵𝗵𝗮𝗻 (Office Manager), and the New Jersey crew proudly took part in the 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 celebrations, helping connect families and residents with the importance of trees and the environment. One of the biggest highlights of the day — especially for children — was once again our popular 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Under the supervision of Almstead’s professional climbers, children were safely hoisted high into a magnificent 75-foot beech tree for an unforgettable experience and a unique view of the event from above. Adding even more excitement to the celebration were our beloved Treeture mascots, 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, who delighted children by greeting visitors, posing for photos, and spreading plenty of smiles throughout the day. Almstead staff also distributed Deodar Cedar and Norway Spruce saplings to residents, encouraging families to plant and care for trees in their own communities. This year alone, Almstead has distributed more than 2,500 saplings throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut as part of our ongoing Arbor Day and Earth Day outreach efforts.

VP 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 and arborist 𝗝𝗼𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗮, along with the Almstead crew, were proud to partner with local 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀 at the 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 in Eastchester, NY to plant 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗲 saplings. The day brought together Girl Scout leaders, parents, teachers, 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮 (Eastchester Town Supervisor), and the Blau family — honoring the legacy of the late 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝘂, creator of the beloved Treeture book series and the Sprig and Steward characters. These young trees represent more than just an Arbor Day planting — they’re an investment in the future of the community. Once mature, the Norway Spruce saplings will be transplanted throughout Eastchester or donated to local residents, helping grow a greener, healthier environment for years to come.

Almstead’s 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 (Branch Manager), 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿 (Office Manager), and the Connecticut crew visited 𝗙𝗼𝘅 𝗥𝘂𝗻 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 in Norwalk, CT to celebrate Arbor Day. The team planted a Honeycrisp apple tree and participated in the school’s Arbor Day assembly — alongside 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗴, our Treeture squirrel, who was a big hit with students and staff.

Almstead CEO 𝗞𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 celebrated Arbor Day with nearly 600 students at 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘅𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹, delivering a lively, kid-friendly presentation designed to spark curiosity about trees and the environment. He shared why Arbor Day matters and highlighted the many ways trees benefit our communities — from cleaner air to healthier ecosystems. Adding to the fun, 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗴 — the friendly Treeture squirrel (with Peggy Almstead in costume) — was a big hit with students and teachers alike, bringing smiles and energy to the celebration. As part of the day, Almstead also donated Red Maple seedlings, which will be distributed to children and families at an Earth Day event later today — helping the next generation take part in planting and caring for trees. 🌱

𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗬 𝗔𝗥𝗕𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗔𝗬! As we celebrate Arbor Day (on the last Friday in April every year) we’re proud to reflect on a tradition that has been part of Almstead for more than 30 years. Our founder, 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱, began celebrating Arbor Day as a way to connect with the communities we serve and share the importance of trees. That tradition has been carried forward by his sons, 𝗞𝗲𝗻 and 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱, and continues to grow each year. Over the decades, our Arbor Day efforts have reached thousands of students, families, and community members, helping to inspire a deeper appreciation for trees and the environment. We’re especially honored that these efforts were recognized with the International Society of Arboriculture’s prestigious Gold Leaf Award for Arbor Day activities. Take a look back at some of these early moments that helped shape a tradition we’re proud to continue today.
