  • For the first time, GulfCon was hosted right here in Alabama, and our Mobile teammates were proud to take part!    This year’s event brought together partners from across the five Gulf states to collaborate on coastal restoration, resilience, and stewardship. Alongside coastal scientists, community leaders, and partners from across the Gulf, we’re planning for a more resilient future. Together, we’re advancing stewardship efforts that strengthen both our ecosystems and our coastal communities. #GulfCon Elizabeth Weatherford Thomas

  • Congratulations to Josh Petty and our Distribution Control Center Training team on receiving the Southeastern Electric Exchange Industry Excellence Award! Setting a new benchmark in workforce development, their innovative, simulation-based program prepares new operators to be fully shift-ready in just 12 months—achieving a 94% success rate. We’re proud to lead with innovation, mentorship, and a shared commitment to powering a stronger, more resilient grid for the future.

A well-deserved congratulations to Josh Petty and his team from Alabama Power Company, winner of the S.E.E. Industry Excellence Award in the Training Category!!! Their Distribution System Operator (DSO) Training Program is setting a new industry benchmark by taking trainees—even those with no prior electrical experience—and making them fully shift-ready in just 12 months. What makes it work? A hands-on simulation environment built around an ADMS platform that recreates real storms and outages. Operators get to make high-pressure calls and build real technical skills, without any risk to the actual grid. The results speak for themselves: a 94% trainee success rate in 2025. This project proves that with the right mix of innovation and mentorship, we can build a more resilient grid and a better-prepared workforce for the future. #UtilityIndustry #TrainingExcellence #SEEconf2026 #GridModernization #Innovation

Alabama Power Company earned Gold in the Outage Communications category of Chartwell’s Best Practices Awards for transforming how Estimated Restoration Time, or ETR, is managed and communicated to customers. Rather than relying on static system outputs, Alabama Power built an actively managed, real time ETR program supported by more than 25 dedicated ETR Monitors. Team members review, validate, and update restoration estimates based on evolving field conditions, ensuring customers receive timely, accurate, and context aware information. Backed by formal guidelines, cross functional coordination, and a continuous improvement mindset, the program elevates outage messaging into a coordinated customer experience rather than a passive update. For utility professionals working to improve outage communications, manage customer expectations, and build greater trust during disruptive events, Alabama Power’s approach offers a practical and proven model. Their work highlights what is possible when process, technology, and people are aligned around a shared goal of clarity and consistency. You can learn directly from Alabama Power and other industry leaders as they share their experiences live at Chartwell’s #PowerUp Conference in Atlanta this September 22 to 24. Congratulations again to Alabama Power on this well-deserved Gold award and on setting a strong example for the industry. For the full list of winners, check out this blog: https://lnkd.in/etH4KsKr

  • With severe weather expected across parts of Alabama tonight, our teams are preparing. Technology like SPEAR helps us analyze incoming weather and anticipate how storms could affect the electric system so we can stage crews and resources where they may be needed most. By combining weather modeling with system data, the tool helps us better understand when, where and how severe weather could impact our grid.   Every storm also helps make the technology stronger. Data gathered from each event helps refine SPEAR’s models so we can continue improving how we predict potential impacts and strengthen reliability for our customers.

  • ⚡ A new chapter in Alabama’s energy future is taking shape in Walker County. Alabama Power is installing 92 Tesla Megapacks at its new Gorgas Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) — the state’s first utility‑scale battery storage project. Once complete, the facility will store 150 MW of electricity, enough to power roughly 9,000 homes for two hours, helping support reliability when demand peaks. By charging during off‑peak times and discharging when the grid needs extra support, Gorgas BESS will strengthen grid resilience, manage costs and create new opportunities to integrate renewable energy across Alabama Power’s network. Beyond its technical impact, this project transforms the historic Plant Gorgas site, honoring more than a century of energy generation while paving the way for a sustainable future. This is innovation built on tradition — a powerful step toward a smarter, more reliable Alabama energy grid.
