Setting a new benchmark for sustainable healthcare, the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion has officially achieved LEED Platinum® certification. This 700,000-square-foot patient care facility marks a major milestone for the University of Michigan Medical School, achieving a remarkable 50% reduction in carbon emissions compared to similar healthcare projects. To reach this elite tier of performance, #AEI reimagined the typical hospital chiller plant. Instead of a uniform approach, we implemented a decentralized system with low-temperature chillers specifically for the 23 surgical suites and 243 inpatient rooms. By integrating heat recovery capabilities, the design offsets 25% of the building’s largest energy end use, reheat energy, saving $110,000 in annual energy costs while maintaining the precise environments required for critical care. Organizations invest heavily in physical security technology, yet one critical element is frequently overlooked: the people who occupy the building every day. In a web panel discussion hosted by SecurityInfoWatch.com, #AEI Security Leader Sean Ahrens explores the role occupant behavior, awareness, and training play in real-world emergency readiness. Improving building occupants’ security awareness and participation helps foster a more sustainable safety culture, strengthening responses to incidents such as workplace violence and natural disasters. Sean and his fellow panelists share strategies for building occupant-centered emergency preparedness programs, along with practical communication methods, training techniques, and the use of security trend data to enhance readiness, engagement, and compliance.
