With Memorial Day approaching this weekend, my senses are heightened to disingenuous, surface-level performative messaging surrounding the day. That's not the case with my current employer (or past employers, but I see terrible takes all around). I joined AccentCare last summer, and they've listened to my perspective as a veteran surrounding Memorial Day - views I developed through listening to other veterans and, of course, my own experiences. The organization sincerely cares about and is honored to serve veterans. It's authentic. And they're embracing the notion that Memorial Day is set aside for people we lost- not veterans like me. I'm proud to work here and feel fulfilled that the communications leaders took my input to heart. I’m not saying Memorial Day only belongs to military losses. Its history is broad. It’s great to see where I work being open to shifting its approach based on new understanding. That kind of willingness to listen and evolve means a lot.
