To Whom It May Concern,
As a part of a modernization effort, the University of Maryland planned to port
legacy mainframe batch programs from COBOL to Java. Due to the sheer volume of
programs that had to be converted, manual migration was ruled out as too
time-consuming. After reviewing several available automated tools we selected the
Ispirer’s MnMTK software as a conversion tool.
The University of Maryland collaborated with Ispirer in a six-month engagement phase to tune MnMTK to produce high-quality Java code based on the original COBOL code. The Ispirer team was able to provide timely, professional services, often resolving problems identified by our team within one business day. Using MnMTK tool, two hundred COBOL programs containing more than 100,000 lines of code were successfully converted to corresponding Java programs.
Because of Ispirer and MnMTK, our team was able to devote its time to build the infrastructure for new Java programs instead of spending time on converting code. The produced Java code met all our maintainability, readability and performance requirements. One unexpected advantage of the converted Java code was its similarity to the original COBOL code which facilitated a smooth transition for COBOL developers to switch to Java.
The Ispirer team was committed to our common success and they often went beyond expectations to meet project goals. Based on our successful experience, we recommend Ispirer as a reliable provider of application conversion solutions and services.
