Why we’re doing this

Sydney is one of the world’s most liveable cities. Our local area has grown rapidly over the last 10 years with almost 32,000 new homes (25,000 private and 6,700 non-private dwellings).

Our city is continuing to grow and exploring opportunities for more housing is a necessary part of addressing the housing challenge.

We want to work with our communities to provide homes that meet the needs of more people in attractive and liveable places supported by public transport, walking and bike connections and great public spaces and facilities.

What we’re doing

The Housing for All discussion paper has been prepared to guide a conversation about where and how we can plan for more local housing. It doesn’t establish policy or commit to changing planning controls. The paper asks 3 important questions about housing:

  1. Where and how can we plan for more homes?
  2. What should the NSW Government do to support more homes?
  3. How can housing better meet the diverse needs of our community?

We have identified 10 ideas for where more housing could be created:

  1. Ultimo and Pyrmont with Wentworth Park returned
  2. Connecting Green Square and Waterloo
  3. Prince Alfred Park edges
  4. Renewing the Supa Centa site near Moore Park
  5. Renewing Broadway: UTS to Glebe Point Road
  6. Renewing underused sites along Parramatta Road
  7. More life (and living) on our high streets
  8. Mid-rise living in Beaconsfield
  9. Gentle density on laneways
  10. Park-side living for more people to enjoy

We also ask the NSW Government to play a greater role in creating more homes on its land and supporting residents with infrastructure.

New housing must reflect the diverse needs of our communities. We need housing that is suitable for people from different backgrounds, ages, incomes and lifestyles.

We invite you to read our discussion paper, comment on the interactive map and take our survey. You can find out more by attending one of our public forums hosted by Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO.
