About us

We're finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs. Iron ore for steel. Low carbon aluminium for electric cars and smartphones. Copper for wind turbines, electric cars and the pipes that bring water to our home. Borates that help crops grow and titanium for paint.

We’ve just shipped our 8 billionth tonne of iron ore from the Pilbara region in Western Australia. To put it in perspective, 8 billion tonnes is enough iron ore to produce the steel needed for: 🔩 161,000 Perth Optus Stadiums 🔩 134,000 Tokyo Skytrees 🔩 46,000 Beijing National Stadiums (Bird’s Nest). The milestone shipment was loaded at Cape Lambert port on the Juno Horizon and is now on its way to Nippon Steel in Japan – almost 60 years after our first Pilbara ore left Dampier port for Yawata Steel Works, a predecessor of Nippon Steel. It’s a strong reminder of what generations of people across our Pilbara iron ore business have built over 6 decades, and the role the Pilbara continues to play in supplying iron ore to customers around the world. #IronOre #Pilbara #Steel

"I'm proud to be part of an industry that is so important to Chile and so essential to the energy transition." Antonia, part of our Chile team, helps connect technical insight, business development and stakeholder engagement across our work in Chile. After studying business and finance, she joined the Escondida finance team and quickly began building her knowledge of mining, learning from experts across Finance, Commercial, Technical and Project teams. A 4-month rotation in Chicago gave her a broader view of how our Commercial teams work, and helped her see how closely mining connects with the world's material needs. "What I like most is that I learn something new every day," she said. "Mining connects so many areas, from chemistry and projects to finance, communities and the environment." Today, Antonia supports technical projects and business development opportunities in Chile, bringing research, planning and a fresh perspective to the table. "Being newer to the industry helps me see things differently. I can bring fresh ideas, challenge how things are done and contribute to how we incorporate new tools." #FindingBetterWays

“If you want exposure to the largest trends shaping the future – the energy transition and AI – this is the portfolio to own.” Our Chief Executive, Simon Trott, spoke at the Bank of America Conference in Miami about the global demand for the materials needed to support the energy transition and AI growth. Together they’re driving demand for a range of metals and materials, including copper for data centres, lithium for batteries, aluminium for advanced manufacturing and steel for renewable infrastructure. With the right assets in the right commodities, we’re well positioned to continue delivering strong returns while supplying the materials the world needs. Around a mine every year until the end of the decade...that's what we're aiming to open in Western Australia. From our first load out of Tom Price in 1966 to opening our 18th mine at Western Range in 2025, we’ve continued to invest in our Western Australian iron ore operations. And we're not slowing down. In that time, we’ve worked with communities and partners to operate projects, create jobs and support growth in the region. Complemented by high‑grade products from our IOC and Simandou operations, Western Australia will remain critical to meet global demand for steel. #IronOre #Pilbara #FindingBetterWays

From data centres to renewable energy systems, copper is an enabler of electrification. As demand for connectivity and cleaner energy grows, so does the need for materials that can carry power efficiently and reliably. Copper does both of these. It's also in many everyday items like the: 🌇 cables that power cities 🌐 infrastructure behind the internet 💦 pipes to transport water to homes 🔋 systems that accelerate the energy transition. We're working to supply the copper needed for a more connected, lower-carbon future. #FindingBetterWays #Copper

From scrappy interstellar freighters to the latest missions around the Moon, many great spacecraft begin with essential materials found on Earth.   🚀 Aluminium helps keep structures lightweight. 🔋 Lithium supports battery and energy storage systems. 🔌 Copper forms the backbone of electrical and thermal systems. ⚒️ Iron ore that becomes steel brings the strength, durability and protection needed to go the distance.   #FindingBetterWays

Global demand for lithium is growing, fast. So we need ways to produce more of it, quickly and responsibly. Direct lithium extraction (DLE) is one way we're doing this for brine-based lithium deposits. The technology produces more lithium, faster, and with a higher purity than traditional pond-based methods. But it comes with trade-offs – a more complex plant, and it uses more energy. We've been a pioneer in DLE for 3 decades, and are prioritising the technology for future expansion projects. #Lithium #DirectLithiumExtraction #FindingBetterWays
