A few shifts already standing out from the floor at Natural Products Expo this week. Regenerative Organic Alliance is moving beyond the premium niche. ROC products are starting to move into everyday staples. If they land in the staples aisle, that changes scale — and the price gap begins to narrow. Women’s health is evolving beyond the simple “fertility vs menopause” narrative. The next phase will likely be category segmentation — products addressing more specific life stages and needs. Snacking and RTD are still where the fastest innovation cycles happen. These categories tend to have the fastest NPD churn and are often a good signal for flavour and format experimentation. This year the floor is full of dill pickle, with nostalgia and “swicy” flavours remain strong. There’s a noticeable push toward higher-protein snacks and snacks built around nuts and seeds, reinforcing the broader shift toward nutrient density. Protein innovation in the GLP-1 era. With reduced food intake, every bite has to work harder nutritionally. High-protein claims are now appearing in categories that traditionally carried very little protein positioning — from rice to noodles and beyond. (Examples from the show floor below.) What stands out at Expo West is how quickly these shifts are moving from trend language into actual products on shelves. Curious what others are noticing on the floor this year.

On my way to Natural Products Expo this week, my thoughts keep returning to BIOFACH. There weren’t dramatic flavour swings. No extreme innovation theatre. No headline-grabbing or viral launches. Instead, organic felt steady. Almost like it’s re-claiming its ground. Quality. Transparency. Standards. But beneath that calm, three shifts were clear. 1. Ingredient simplification. Lists are shortening, even in plant-based innovation. Less formulation gymnastics. In a category built on trust, complexity is starting to look like friction. 2. Premium under pressure. Organic brands can no longer rely on principle alone to justify price. Packaging is sharper, designed to earn its place on shelf. Claims are clearer. Founders are more visible. Story is working harder before the product even hits retail. There’s a noticeable effort to articulate why it costs more. 3. Protein, everywhere. High-protein language has fully entered organic. Snacks, cereals, bakery, ambient; no aisle untouched. The difference is subtle: in organic, the tension is between fortification and integrity. How far can you push function before you compromise fundamentals? None of this felt frantic. If anything, it felt like organic is resetting — not chasing ultra-processed innovation, but quietly redefining what “better” means in 2026. #OrganicRetail

Starting today, we’re once again partnering with our friends at BUY WOMEN BUILT for a women-focused month. At the heart of this is something we see every day on our shelves – women building businesses that care about you and our planet. From thoughtful ingredients and responsible sourcing to brands built around real values of care, these incredible founders are shaping a better kind of retail system. In the UK, female entrepreneurship is still 30% lower than in other developed nations but together we can help change that. This partnership shines a spotlight on inspiring brands founded by women, turning everyday shopping into a force for progress. Throughout the month, we’ll be celebrating – in our stores and on our website – the products, people and stories behind these brands – and the impact they’re making with every purchase. #internationalwomensday #womensday #buywomenbuilt #planetorganic #womenbuilt
