Nearly three months on, around 1,550 ships and more than 20,000 mariners remain stranded in the Persian Gulf. Iran has largely closed the Strait of Hormuz to most Western-flagged vessels, while the US Navy blockades Iranian ports. A two-tier transit regime now operates: bilateral carve-outs for China, Russia, India and others, with million-dollar tolls and mines in the channel for everyone else. Our latest post breaks down exactly what is happening — and what it means for operators right now. #MaritimeSecurity #StraitOfHormuz #Shipping #MaritimeIntelligence #Tankers #MariTrace https://lnkd.in/efvVDFBs
About us
We monitor hundreds of thousands of vessels worldwide, from tugs to tankers, using a wide network of satellite and terrestrial ais receivers. MariTrace has an intuitive map interface that can be enhanced with a variety of different data overlays and ship-tracking data. Each vessel has up to 35 data attributes, position history, draught changes and port calls. Our users consider MariTrace to be the natural choice for ship-tracking needs. In addition, the MariTrace platform gives access to a vast filterable database of thousands of piracy incidents covering many years. We offer access to on-demand risk assessments allowing you to analyse the risk to your vessels along your routes in a matter of seconds. If you need real-time global shipping trade data, MariTrace lets you analyse all aspects of global shipping to develop unique market insights, identify investment opportunities, and monitor the activity of individual ships, or whole industry sectors. By systematically tracking the worldwide movements of over 50,000 commercial ships between 7,500 ports, and blending with additional proprietary data sets, we provide a unique perspective on more than 100,000 individual cargo movements that occur every month.

New post on the MariTrace blog: The Pentagon's inspector general has opened an investigation into Operation Southern Spear — the US military's campaign of lethal strikes on alleged drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, which has carried out 58 strikes and killed at least 193 people since September 2025. Our latest post examines what the probe means for maritime security doctrine in the region and what operators need to know. https://lnkd.in/eGvYFkuZ #MaritimeSecurity #OperationSouthernSpear #Caribbean #EasternPacific #MaritimeLaw #Shipping #MariTrace

Worth reading this one from MariTrace — the seizure of a floating armory vessel off Fujairah is a detail that gets lost in the broader Hormuz coverage but matters a lot if you're running security operations in the Gulf of Oman.
The reported seizure of a floating armory vessel off Fujairah on 14 May reveals a dimension of the Hormuz crisis that hasn't received much attention: the maritime security infrastructure itself is now at risk. Our latest post looks at the Hui Chuan — a vessel-based armory used by anti-piracy contractors — and what its seizure means for PMSCs operating in the Gulf of Oman. https://lnkd.in/eYY5mjZF #MaritimeSecurity #StraitOfHormuz #PMSC #MaritimeIntelligence #Shipping

Since the US-Iran war began in February, satellite imagery has logged 42 ship-to-ship transfers of Iranian sanctioned crude in a single anchorage off the Malaysian coast. Malaysia's maritime enforcement agency confirmed this week it can't stop the activity under current law. Our latest post explains the jurisdictional gap, what happened when Malaysia did try to enforce, and what it means for operators in the Singapore Strait corridor. #MaritimeSecurity #ShadowFleet #SanctionsEvasion #MalaccaStrait #Iran #ShippingIntelligence #MaritimeIntelligence https://lnkd.in/eRnP__yD

A Spanish investigation has revealed that the MV Ursa Major — a US-sanctioned Russian heavy-lift vessel that sank off Spain in December 2024 — was allegedly carrying submarine nuclear reactor components destined for North Korea. The cargo was declared on the manifest as "manhole covers." Our post sets out what the investigation has established and what remains officially unresolved. #MaritimeSecurity #GhostFleet #SanctionsEvasion #NorthKorea #ShippingIntelligence #DarkFleet #MaritimeIntelligence https://lnkd.in/evVyu6js

A bulk carrier was hit by an unknown projectile 23 nautical miles north-east of Doha on Sunday morning, the master reporting a fire that was contained without casualties (UKMTO). Qatar's Ministry of Defence has confirmed the incident as a drone strike on a commercial vessel inbound from Abu Dhabi, north-east of Mesaieed Port. Iran's Fars news agency named the flag as American; that has not been independently confirmed by Doha or Washington at time of writing. Today's blog walks through what's verified, what isn't, and how it sits alongside UANI's 8 May running tally of 42 confirmed maritime incidents since hostilities began, the P&I cancellation notices that took effect 5 March, and Lloyd's List's indicative US$10–14m VLCC war-risk premiums. MariTrace reposted this
Iran's Foreign Minister has announced the Strait of Hormuz is fully open to commercial vessel passage, linked to the ceasefire in Lebanon. The announcement has been welcomed at the highest political levels. But declarations aren't the same as ground truth. At MariTrace, we're watching the Strait in real time. The screenshot below shows live vessel movement as of today — and we'll be tracking closely whether traffic patterns, vessel behaviour, and AIS reporting align with what's been announced. For the shipping companies, insurers, and war risk underwriters watching this space: political statements are the starting point. Independent, verified maritime intelligence is what you base decisions on. We'll keep watching. 👁️ 📍 Strait of Hormuz | Live Tracking | #MaritimeSecurity #WarRisk #Hormuz #ShippingIntelligence #AIS #MariTrace #MaritimeIntelligence #Insurance #Tankers

How complete is your view of vessel activity? AIS is powerful — but not always sufficient on its own. This piece from Digital Ship highlights the growing need for more reliable, multi-source tracking data. Proud to be part of the conversation. #Maritime #Shipping #AIS #MaritimeTech #SituationalAwareness #OceanTech
Maritime operations depend heavily on tracking, but how reliable is the data behind it? In this Digital Ship Exclusive Feature, Thomas Owen of MariTrace notes that overreliance on AIS creates a hidden risk. When signals become delayed or intermittent, operators may be acting on outdated positions, without even realising it. What needs to be done now is treat tracking as core digital infrastructure, and not just a standalone tool. Combining AIS with vessel-originated data can restore confidence, align ship and shore, and enable faster, safer decisions. 🔗 Link to the full story in the comments.
