  • When people talk about workforce data, the conversation usually starts with HR. But some of the clearest insight into what is really happening across a business often sits inside payroll. Overtime trends. Retention risk. Absence patterns. Hiring pressure. Workforce stability. Employee trust. Payroll contains a huge amount of operational and people data that many organisations still underuse. In this latest article for HRM Outlook, Nick Day explores why payroll is becoming increasingly strategic, and why businesses that continue viewing it as purely transactional could be missing some of the most valuable workforce insight they already have. As AI and workforce complexity continue to evolve, the organisations that connect payroll, HR and workforce strategy most effectively will likely have a major advantage. Nick Day took the stage at PayCon last week in Nashville, with a talk based on his new book: The Payroll Pivot: Is The Fear Tax Making You Invisible? If you have read the book, you’ll know it’s not just another payroll guide, but a blend of storytelling, psychology, leadership coaching and industry insight, steering payroll professionals to step into their influence. Nick immediately captured the room with his trademark warmth, humour and deeply human approach. Drawing on more than two decades in payroll recruitment and coaching, he challenged the audience to rethink the limiting narratives payroll professionals often tell themselves - particularly the phrase… “I’m just in payroll.” Nick explored the “fear tax” - the hidden cost of staying silent, avoiding visibility and shrinking away from strategic influence. Throughout the session, attendees were encouraged to reflect on the fears and assumptions holding them back professionally, particularly as AI continues reshaping the future of work. Rather than presenting AI as a threat, Nick positioned it as payroll’s opportunity to evolve from operational processor to strategic advisor - describing payroll professionals as the future “algorithmic conscience of work.” In true Nick style, he had the audience visibly engaged throughout - laughing, nodding along and actively participating in exercises and reflections. The atmosphere in the room became increasingly emotional and empowering as attendees connected their own experiences to the stories being shared on stage. Nick also shared a practical framework designed to help professionals navigate fear in high-pressure leadership moments, while encouraging attendees to identify one important conversation they needed to have when returning to work. A particularly memorable moment came as Nick reminded the audience: “Algorithms calculate, but people care.” The session concluded with a standing sense of reflection and inspiration, and the energy in the room made it clear the session had struck a genuine chord with payroll professionals navigating visibility, confidence and leadership in a rapidly evolving industry. • An incredible morning at the PayrollOrg (formerly the American Payroll Association and GPMI) Executive Summit 2026 in Nashville, where our CEO, Nick Day led the panel talk on: “The $50 Billion Question: Why Payroll Still Has No Seat at the Table — And How AI Finally Changes That.” Joined by Joe Ranzau from Grant Thornton (US), Nathan Male from Deloitte and Gregory Russell Harmer from CVS Health, the session uncovered how over $46B in valuation has flowed into payroll and workforce infrastructure through deals involving Dayforce, Deel, Rippling and others… Yet inside many organisations, payroll is still treated like an administrative support function. That contradiction became the heartbeat of the session. Joe challenged the room with the idea that payroll’s greatest untapped asset isn’t processing capability — it’s trusted workforce data and governance. Nathan pushed hard on the reality that most organisations are dramatically underprepared for the EU AI Act and that many payroll-adjacent AI use cases may already fall into “high-risk” territory. Greg brought the operator perspective: “AI works best where work is repetitive, rules-based and measurable. Payroll is naturally suited to that. But governance maturity is nowhere near where vendor marketing says it is.” That line got a visible reaction across the room. And perhaps the biggest theme of all: Payroll leaders don’t need to become technologists. But they do need to become orchestrators. The conversation evolved far beyond payslips and processing into: • AI governance • workforce intelligence • data ownership • risk accountability • multinational operational design • strategic credibility at board level One thing that shone through is that AI will not automatically give payroll a seat at the table. But it will expose which organisations understand that payroll already sits on one of the richest operational and workforce datasets in the enterprise. The future belongs to the organisations that govern it properly. #globalpayroll #executivesummit #artificialintelligence #paycon26

  • Mental Health Awareness Week is a reminder that mental health is something all of us have, and all of us need to look after. Life can move quickly. Work, relationships, pressure, uncertainty, expectations, social media, trying to stay on top of everything. Sometimes people are struggling far more than they let on. This year’s theme focuses on turning awareness into action. That action does not always need to be huge. Sometimes it’s checking in on someone properly. Sometimes it’s asking for help yourself. Sometimes it’s setting boundaries, slowing down, getting outside, or simply being more honest about how you’re feeling. A lot of people carry things quietly. Kindness, empathy and genuine conversations can make more of a difference than we realise. Look after yourself, and look out for the people around you too.
