This new blog by Surabhi Mantha features discussion from Dr Christian Calvillo (CEP Senior Research Fellow), from an event exploring 'green' jobs and skills🛠️👷 Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC) Centre for Joined-Up Sustainability Transformations (JUST)
In late November, two months into my Social Change, Environment and Sustainability course, I covered a Green Skills and Jobs panel discussion for the Sustainable Consumption Institute at the The University of Manchester. It was hosted as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science in collaboration with Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC) and the Centre for Joined-Up Sustainability Transformations (JUST). The conversation around a greener economy often sparks one big question: what does a green economy truly look like, and who essentially gets to be a part of it? A lot of the discussion came back to a simple but uncomfortable gap, we talk about green jobs as if everyone understands what that means, but in reality, the picture is still pretty unclear. There’s still a real disconnect between policy ambition and how people actually discover, access, or even imagine themselves in these careers. As I continue navigating the green jobs and sustainability space, the link between awareness, education and opportunity is hard to grasp. Because a transition at this scale only works if people can actually see themselves in it. With the right awareness and tools, we are closer to understanding how these pathways can be made more visible, inclusive and connected. Would be really interested to hear from others working in this space, how are you seeing the skills gap and job pathways evolve on the ground?
