Brilliant to see this new report out from Peter Hyman and Shuab Gamote. It's a powerful, thought-provoking, moving testimony of young people's experiences of being NEET or at risk of being NEET. It's so rare in policy that you find so many young people's voices in one report, so it's well worth a read. Action for Children is proud to have contributed to the research by convening groups of young people with experience of being NEET to take part in six in-person workshops in Cardiff, Penarth, Wrexham, Rhyl and Suffolk. We also convened two online workshops specifically for care-experienced young people with experience of being NEET. Thank you to everyone who helped us with these - your voices are being heard! The central message of the report is so important: young people are not to blame for this systemic issue. These are ambitious, talented and resilient. More than 90% of them want to work, but they are what Peter calls "the stranded generation", because there are too many barriers in their way and not enough clear pathways. They face "too many snakes and not enough ladders". As a society, we cannot allow this to continue - we need to take action now. That's why we're eagerly awaiting the release of the two 'Young People and Work' reports from Alan Milburn (which 'Inside the Mind of a Young NEET' has fed into). We'll be responding to the first report when it's out next week. #YoungPeopleAndWork #NEETs #ChildrenInCare

Substack: Changing the Story. Senior Advisor Sir Keir Starmer 2022-24, Co-founder of School 21 and Voice 21, Founder of School 360, Advisor to Prime Minister Tony Blair 1997-2003.

Today Shuab Gamote and I launch our report: Inside the Mind of a Young NEET. It is based on more than 400 conversations with young people across the UK who are not in education, employment or training between the ages of 16 and 24. There are now very nearly one million young NEETs - nothing short of a national emergency and it is time to act. The voices you will hear in this report give the vital lived experience on which all good policy should be based. These are some of the most powerful themes from the young people we listened to. They want us to know that.... ➡️School does not prepare them for work. ➡There is an obsession with exams and university at school and no one talks about the other possibilities. ➡️They want to work but, entry level jobs are very hard to get and without experience often impossible. ➡️They need an adult to support them at vital transitions. ➡️They are often lonely and lacking social skills because of Covid and social media. ➡️They have talents, passions and interests, but no one seems to care about them. ➡️They need access to a trusted adult at the moments that matter. Too many transitions feel like a cliff edge. ➡️Employers and professionals do not appear to understand mental health, caring responsibilities, neurodiverse conditions or growing up in poverty, sufficiently well to adapt. ➡️When they are in a rut wasting years in their bedroom, they need someone with a plan and a bit of tough love to help them through it. Please share the report so that these voices are heard. • Small acts of kindness occur in the UK all the time, but they can often be left untold. That's why we've joined community groups, as well as other charities, to celebrate 'A Million Acts of Hope' and share our stories. As part of this campaign, our brilliant partner Nationwide Building Society have been supporting our local services. At our Amaryllis Housing service, Nationwide rolled up their sleeves and painted the hallway, bathroom and bedrooms, transforming the environment with care and dedication. This allowed them to see first-hand the difference their support can make to creating a safe, comforting place for those who need it most. Meanwhile at our Cardiff service, more Nationwide colleagues spent the entire day painting and decorating the inside of the building that's used by young people. "What you did will have a real and lasting impact. The room you helped create will become a place where our service users feel safe, supported and able to grow." Dionne - Service Coordinator. We want to share a huge thanks to Nationwide for transforming these spaces for our young people! #MillionActsOfHope #SpreadHope #Kindness #ActionForChildren #SpreadJoy

  • It’s Foster Care Fortnight, a time to recognise incredible foster carers who provide safety, stability and care for children when they need it most ❤️ We’re proud to be marking this alongside John Lewis Partnership and celebrating a meaningful milestone. Since our partnership began, the programmes they fund have supported 100 foster carers across the UK. Thanks to their support we've been able to help foster carers alongside young people during critical life moments. Whether that’s settling into a new home, or preparing for adulthood. Their role during these transition points can be life‑shaping. Through transition‑focused support, carers and young people are backed before, during and after key changes. This helps build stronger, more stable networks when consistency matters most. Together, we’re helping more children and young people feel safe, supported and believed in. Thank you to every foster carer, and to the John Lewis Partnership for standing with them. #FCF26 #FosterCareFortnight #BuildingHappierFutures #ValueFosterCare John Lewis & Partners

Can you simply work your way out of poverty? IPPR and Action for Children’s new findings challenge this. So proud to be part of the launch of this important report written by Scott Compton, Henry Parkes and Jamie O'Halloran which looks at how Government can build on its Get Britain Working agenda to support low income working parents to progress. I was pleased to be able to talk to GMB and other media about it today followed by our launch event in Parliament with a fantastic panel and strong debate. Do take a look here: https://lnkd.in/ej6agy5f

Work isn't working. New research by Scott Compton and Henry Parkes shows that almost three-quarters of children in poverty now live in working households, with children in single parent families twice as likely to fall into poverty. If we’re serious about tackling child poverty, we need to move beyond getting parents into work and look at a complete overhaul of the benefits system, including the childcare element of Universal Credit, to support them to balance work and parenting. This quote from one of the research participants says it all: “If I was single, I wouldn’t be able to work at all – my youngest isn’t at school yet and we don’t have family nearby. We’ve had to organise everything around childcare just to keep one income coming in.” https://lnkd.in/ewEUXnch #WorkIsntWorking IPPR Action for Children

  • We're thrilled that one of our young campaigners, Georgia Sullivan has been shortlisted for the Campaigner of the Year Award at the Sheila McKechnie Foundation Awards this year 👏 Georgia was central to our #PayingThePrice campaign last year, which called on the UK government to scrap the two-child limit. Congratulations to her and everyone else nominated in this category! #SMKAwards2026 #LoveCampaigning #ChangeIsPossible

Acts of kindness happen across the UK all the time, but are too often left untold. That's why until 20 May, Action for Children is joining community and faith groups, as well as other charities, to celebrate 'A Million Acts of Hope' and counter those who seek to divide us - by sharing our stories of hope. Our Cardiff office is the hub for a number of services for the local community, like our SkillsPlus+ service, a psychosocial skills building intervention for care leavers. It is a safe space for children and young people. Staff took part in a litter pick to make our space welcoming when children and families visit us, and to connect with the local community. Emma Burke organised the litter pick and said: “It was fantastic to bring colleagues together for a litter pick at our Cardiff office as part of A Million Acts of Hope campaign. Small actions like this can make a real difference to our local community, and it was great to see everyone getting involved and taking pride in the space around us. It’s a simple way to give back, while also spending time together and doing something positive for the environment.” #MillionActsofHope

  • This week colleagues from Scottish Friendly volunteered at our Renfrewshire Short Breaks Service 💗 A brilliant opportunity for them to get stuck in and support children and families. Thanks to their funding, we're able to deliver our 'Scottish Friendly Wellbeing Programme'. This project helps children struggling with things like anxiety and low confidence. It provides early and compassionate mental health support right where it’s needed most, in school. By being with young people early on, the programme helps them develop tools to cope with everyday challenges. Teachers and families tell us how vital this support is, particularly in communities facing disadvantage. Mental health matters all year, but during #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek we want to say a huge thanks to Scottish Friendly for investing in children’s wellbeing and helping them feel hopeful about the future. #CommunitySupport #ActionforChildren #ScottishFriendly Action for Children Scotland
